UNCG Baseball Falls to BYU In Game 1
PROVO, Utah – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team fell to BYU, 14-8, on Thursday night at Miller Park.

Dosi Jonas hit his ninth home run of the season in the top of the first, driving in teammates Zack Budzik and Mitchell Smith for a three-run home run.

Dallas Callahan, who came in to catch, went 1-for-1 at the plate with a two-run home run in the top of the ninth for his fifth home run of the season.

How it happened

Smith started the Spartans’ scoring off by driving in Daniel Cerda on a single to right field for UNCG’s first run of the game. Jonas’ homer extended the Spartans’ lead to 4-0.

The Cougars scored three runs on two hits in the bottom of the first to cut the deficit to one, 4-3.

In the top of the third, Kennedy Jones scored from first base off an error by the pitcher on a failed pick-off attempt to extend the Spartans lead to two runs, 5-3.

BYU’s bats were active in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs off seven hits, including a two-run homer by Cole Gambill to take the Cougar’s first lead of the game, 9-5. Gambill hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth, extending the score to 10-5.

The Cougars scored at least one run in three of the next four innings at the plate for a nine-run lead, 14-5.

UNCG had a last-minute rally in the top of the eighth when Smith grounded out to bring Jones home, 14-6, and then Callahan’s homer cut the deficit to six, 14-8, as BYU claimed game one.
