Craven’s walk-off homerun powers Greensboro to sweep over #19 Pfeiffer

Greensboro, NC – Sunday’s doubleheader was one of the biggest series this season for the Greensboro College Softball team as they hosted #19 Pfeiffer University at Penn-Wright Stadium at Barber Park. Both teams were fighting to get the No. 1 Seed in the upcoming USA South Athletic Conference tournament, and it would be the Pride who gained the advantage by sweeping both games, 7-3 and 1-0.

Game One

The Falcons would get on the scoreboard first, but in the bottom of the first inning, Sophomore Kelsey Craven (Ramseur, NC) hit a two RBI double to give Greensboro the lead 2-1. That was followed by an RBI single from Junior Ivy Ray (Thomasville, NC) to increase the advantage to two runs. Ray would do it again in the bottom of the third inning when she reached on an error, allowing Sophomore Madison Dillner (Leicester, NC) to score and then in the fourth inning Senior Kassie Simmons (Gibsonville, NC) and Junior Alexis Sox (Burlington, NC) combined for three RBI’s to secure the win, 7-3.

The Pride were led by Dillner who finished 3-4 with three runs, while Simmons and Craven each went 2-4 with two RBI’s a piece. In addition, Simmons earned the win on the mound.

Game Two

The two best pitchers in the USA South battled it out on the mound, not allowing their opponents to get anything going offensively. However, in the bottom of the seventh inning, Craven came to the plate and with a 1-2 count, drove a pitch over the fence to straight center field, giving Greensboro the dramatic walk-off win, 1-0.

Junior Lauren Engel (Huntersville, NC) led the Pride on the mound, shutting out Pfeiffer, while only allowing four hits to earn her 16th win of the season.

The Pride will return to action on Tuesday, April 25th as they host Brevard College for a doubleheader at Barber Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00pm.
