Mercer Bears Outlast UNCG Spartans Baseball in 14-9 Loss

MACON, Ga. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team fell to the Mercer Bears in game three despite having 14 hits, with a score of 14-9 in Southern Conference (SoCon) play.

Mitchell Smith hit two home runs, once in the top of the second scoring
GC Jarman and again in the top of the fifth scoring Zack Budzik and Jarman. Smith was 3-for-3 at the plate, and was one of five Spartans with a multi-hit game.

Dosi Jonas hit his 14th home run of the season in the top of the third, to tie Dillon Stweart (2016) and Trevor Edwards (2012) for fifth with the most single-season home runs.

How it happened

Mercer started the game off strong with a three-run homer to lead 3-0 in the bottom of the first.

Jarman had a single to bring in Jonas in top of the second. Smith’s two-run home run tied the game, 3-3.

The Bears extended their lead by bringing in six runs off six hits including two home runs in the bottom of the second making the score 9-3.

Mercer’s Rohrbacher hit his third home run of the day in the bottom of the sixth extending the lead to 13-8.
Mercer tacked on an additional run pushing the score to 14-8 with Connor Torado scoring on a wild pitch.

The Spartans had one more chance in the top of the eighth with
Daniel Cerda scoring off a Dallas Callahan grounding out to second base, for the final score of 14-9.

Notes

Kennedy Jones went 2-for-5 at bat.
Dosi Jonas had a 2-for-4 day at the plate.
GC Jarman went 2-for-3.
Zack Budzik went 2-for-5.
Between both teams, there were eight home runs.

On deck

The Spartans are back home at the UNCG Baseball Stadium for a three-game series against Wofford, starting on May 5th Friday at 6 p.m., followed by a game Saturday and Sunday, where we will knowledge all our seniors before the first pitch on Saturday.
