UNCG Softball Wins Sixth-Straight SoCon Regular Season Title with Doubleheader Sweep

GREENSBORO, N.C.– The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team won its sixth-straight Southern Conference (SoCon) Regular Season title and ninth SoCon title in program history with two wins over Western Carolina on Saturday at UNCG Softball Stadium.

The Spartans won game one 6-2 and then shut out the Catamounts 8-0 in six innings during game two.

UNCG is now 33-20 overall and 12-4 in the SoCon, while Western Carolina is 20-23 and 8-9 in the conference.

Game 1: UNCG 6 – WCU 2

HOW IT HAPPENED
Western Carolina scored the first run of the game on a fielder’s choice scoring Brooklynn Brewington from third for a 1-0 lead.

UNCG scored four unanswered runs in the bottom of the second. The bases quickly got loaded and Maddie Spell grounded out to first base, scoring Maycin Brown from third to tie the game at one. Jaden Cheek’s sacrifice fly to right field scored the second run for the Spartans, 2-1. With two outs, Jorde Chartrand singled to right field, driving in two runs to give UNCG a 4-1 advantage.

In the bottom of the fourth, Chartrand doubled with two outs for a 6-1 lead.

Spell retired 17-straight from the first to the sixth innings before Bailey Huneycutt homered to center field, cutting the deficit to four, 6-2. Spell retired three-straight to hold on to the win.

NOTES:

Chartrand had the lone multi-hit game for the Spartans swinging 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI.
Maxwell went 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
Cheek went 1-for-2 with one run scored and one RBI.
Spell tossed her eighth complete game of the season allowing two hits, two runs, and striking out two batters.

Game 2 UNCG 8 – WCU 0 (6 innings)

HOW IT HAPPENED
UNCG began scoring from the first inning, as Chartrand doubled to right center with one out driving in Delaney Cumbie from first for a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, UNCG extended the lead to 5-0 behind four runs and three hits. With two outs and runners in scoring position, Brown singled to right field driving in Maxwell. Grace Loftin followed Brown with a three-run home run, for her fifth blast of the season.

The Spartans added two more runs in the fifth scoring runs on a wild pitch and an error, 7-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, after back-to-back walks Chartrand singled to right center on a 1-0 count to score the game-winning run for an 8-0 victory.

NOTES:

Chartrand had the lone multi-hit game for the Spartans once again swinging 3-for-3 with one run scored and three RBI.
Maxwell is now on a 13-game on-base streak after going 1-for-3 with two runs.
Grace Loftin went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI.
Brown went 1-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI.

UNCG concludes the regular season tomorrow, Sunday, May 7 hosting Western Carolina with the final game of the series with a first pitch at 1:00 p.m.

The 2023 SoCon Tournament bracket will be announced following the conclusion of all conference play. Since the Spartans won the regular season title and are the number one seed, UNCG received the bye and will play its first game on Thursday, May 11.
