UNCG’s Balbin Enters Top-10 After Round Two of NCAA Regionals

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men’s golf senior Symon Balbin recorded a second round six-under-par (66) scorecard, moving into the top-ten leaderboard, as the Spartans finished Tuesday’s round of the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship’s Las Vegas Regional. The regional is hosted by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority at Bear’s Best Las Vegas.

Starting the day on the tenth tee, Balbin recorded a five-under-par back nine scorecard with eagles on each of the par five holes. Balbin added a birdie right before the turn on the par four, 463-yard 18th hole. That fueled a stretch of three out of four holes where Balbin recorded an under-par result. The senior capped the run on another par five, the 529-yard second hole. Balbin scored on the final par five of the day, the 599-yard eighth hole. Balbin’s six-under-par elevated the senior into the top-ten leaderboard with a 36-hole total of ten-under-par (134). Finishing the second round in a share of seventh place, Balbin stands two shots from a top-five finish and four shots off the overall lead.

Nick Lyerly tallied five birdies as part of his three-under-par (69) second round effort. The graduate student posted an unblemished back nine scorecard by opening the round with two birdies in three holes. Lyerly carded a birdie on the par four, 411-yard tenth hole and followed with a birdie on the 12th. The graduate student posted his third birdie on the side at the par four, 416-yard 16th hole. Lyerly posted birdies on the second and eighth holes, elevating his 36-hole total score to five-under-par (139).

Randall Hudson carded four birdies on his one-under-par second round scorecard. The junior also birdied both par five holes on the back nine and added a birdie on the par four, 461-yard 14th hole. Hudson’s final birdie came on the second hole as the junior finished the second round in a tie for 21st place with a 36-hole total of six-under-par (138). Only one stroke separates Hudson from the top 20 and two strokes from the top 15.

UNCG stood eighth through the second round after a nine-under-par (279) on the second day. The Spartans 36-hole total of 21-under-par (555) stood four shots behind Oklahoma State in seventh place, eight shots behind East Tennessee State in sixth, and nine shots behind Northwestern in fifth.

INSIDE THE SCORECARD

UNCG’s 31-under-par effort on par five holes stood as the third-best effort through the second round.
The Spartans four-over-par score on par threes is tied for the fifth-best score in the field.
With seven eagles, UNCG holds the second-most eagles in the field through two rounds.
Balbin’s 11-under-par score on par five holes ties for the best individual score on par fives.
His four eagles earn Balbin a share for the lead in the category.
Tommy Lamb’s one-under-par effort on par threes currently stands in a tie for sixth.

The Spartans conclude the Las Vegas Regional of the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship tomorrow with a third round start time of 8:25 a.m. PDT, 11:25 a.m. EST. UNCG will be paired with Oklahoma State and Oregon State starting on hole one.
