2023 SoCon Baseball Tournament Central

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team earned a No. 6 seed in the Southern Conference (SoCon) Tournament to face No.7 seeded Western Carolina on Wednesday, May 24th with a first pitch at 7 p.m. at Fluor Field in Greenville, South Carolina.

POSTSEASON AWARDS
Kennedy Jones was named All-Conference First Team and Media All-Conference First Team.
Luke Thomas was named to the All-Conference Freshman Team.
Julien Peissel was named to the All-Conference Freshman Team.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
The Spartans finished the 2023 regular season with a 22-32 overall recordand 9-12 SoCon record.
UNCG is leading the conference in double plays (55) and double plays per game (1.02).
Nationally, the Spartans are second in double plays per game, third in double plays, and 84th in stolen bases (71).
Jones leads the Spartans with a .359 batting average (79-for-220) with 12 doubles, one triple, and 135 total bases.
Jones is nationally ranked 59th in hits (79).
Jones and Dosi Jonas (.323) the two Spartans batting over .300.
Jonas was named Player of the Week on March 3rd after hitting four home runs against VMI. Two were grand slams.
On the mound, 10 different Spartans have at least one win with Jake Wolf leading the way with a 4-2 record and one save in 67.0 innings pitched.
Luke Thomas leads the pitching staff with two saves and he is one of five Spartans who have at least one save on the mound.
Jonas and Jones lead the Spartans with 14 home runs, Dallas Callahanhas seven, Caleb Cozart, and Mitchell Smith, have hit six each. Daniel Cerda has hit five, Rowan Watt and Zack Budzik have hit four home runs each, and Bradley Bott has two.
10 Spartans have double-figure RBIs, with Jonas leading the team with 45 of the 285 RBIs.
Three Spartans have double-figure double plays with Jarman being part of 44 of the 55 double plays.

SCOUTING WESTERN CAROLINA

The Catamounts finished out the regular season with a series loss against No. 10 Oregon State concluding the season 21-32 overall and 8-12 in SoCon play.
WCU is leading the conference in hit batters (69) and is nationally 87thin home runs (72) and home runs per game (1.36).
Pascanel Ferreras has a .325 batting average to lead the Catamounts going 67-for-206 at the plate, with 16 doubles, and 119 total bases.
Zach Ketterman is leading the conference and is nationally 15th in sacrifice files (7).
Brandon Butterworth leads the conference and is fourth in the nation in triples (7).
Ferreras and Butterworth (.307) are the two WCU players that are batting over 300.
11 Catamounts have double-digit RBIs with Ferreras having 53 of the 349.
In the 30.1 innings Ryan White has pitched, he has a 3.86 ERA allowing 29 hits, 18 runs, and has struck out 15 batters.
Gavin Mortenson has three saves to lead WCU, being one of four who have at least one.
Stocum has 13 home runs to lead the Catamounts, with Ferreras and James Jinson each with 12. Ketterman has hit nine, Cole Jones has hit six, while Butterworth and Drew Needham have hit five each. Jordan Starkes has hit four, with Jack Spyke and Landen Morrison having hit two each. Kyle Harbison and Kyle Riesselmann both have hit one apiece.

HISTORY VS. WESTERN CAROLINA

These two teams have played each other 83 times since 1992 with a record of 39-44.

During the regular season, UNCG clinched to series with back-to-back wins, including a 5-4 win in 12 innings and an 11-8 victory in Greensboro, N.C.

In the 2022 season when the Spartans made a history run through the SoCon Tournament to clinch the SoCon Tournament title, UNCG defeated Western Carolina, 9-7, in its third game of the tournament.
