Talk about a man that made an impact…He was a great coach out at Brightwood Christian Academy back in the day, plus he became the most notable detective that Greensboro ever saw…He was the best…Saw him about a month ago at the downtown post office, and he wasn’t walking good, and I hate to hear he is gone…Ed Cobbler, a great father, a great detective, a great coach, and man of strong faith…..He will be missed by many people, and you can’t replace an Ed Cobbler…He was one of the best….

I spoke about Ed being a great coach, and he was…He coached at Brightwood Baptist Christian Academy, and the first basketball game I ever coached was against Ed Cobbler, and I think they called them the Brightwood Christian Academy Broncos…My team, the Vandalia Christian School Vikings won the game, but I learned that day, that you don’t always relish in the win, you relish and learn from who you have competed against, and I learned that day, that our team had just faced and defeated not just a team, but a team led by a man, Ed Cobbler, who would go on to do great things, and he would surpass anything me or my peers from that day, could hope to do….

Ed Cobbler made a huge impact in Greensboro and Guilford County…He coached those Brightwood Christian Academy teams and he led them to many championships, but Ed not only made them Champions on the court, he made them Champions for life…Ed coached Brightwood soccer, flag football, basketball and baseball…

Ed was doing all of that Brightwood Christian Academy coaching while he was working full time with the Greensboro Police Department…Ed worked in the detectives division of the GPD, and after being successful on that front, Ed Cobbler moved on to begin his own detective agency…I think he called it ELC, and Ed ran it for many years…He became easily the most recognized and respected detective in the city of Greensboro…When the Black Lives Matter demonstrations erupted in downtown Greensboro just couple of years back, you could see Ed Cobbler walking down the streets of Greensboro with the WFMY TV reporters, as they covered the disturbances…Ed was there to be a shield and protector of those NEWS 2 employees…

Ed Cobbler was the #1 insider for NEWS 2, when they went needed a detective on air for help with investigative matters…You would see Ed Cobbler live on NEWS 2 quite often…Ed Cobbler was the source NEWS 2 needed for inside investigative information…Ed was a local figure, and you would see his name and face all over town…And sometimes he would be there, and you wouldn’t see him, and that is because Ed would be working undercover…He was the undercover detective that people would call on and hire, when they really wanted/needed to know what was going on behind the scenes…Ed made good money doing what he was doing, but he gave much of it back to the community….

Ed had two sons I remember, and they were Brian and Lee Cobbler…They were both outstanding baseball players at Northeast Guilford High School…Ed supported his boys, and his boys did good, and they did good, because Ed taught and guided them in the right direction…Ed also had a daughter, Ashley, and you can see her comments on Ed and his passing above…

Mr. Ed Cobbler has his two sons, and his daughter, but also had all of those kids that he helped throughout the Greensboro and Guilford County communities…Ed was loved by all of those kids he coached out there at the Brightwood Christian Academy, and to a man and woman, all of them that I have heard from over the years, had nothing but great things to say about Ed Cobbler…There were plenty of kids over around the Fairview Recreation Center that Ed helped too…

The man Ed Cobbler was all about giving back to his community, and his community was all spread out over the entire Piedmont Triad, of North Carolina…..

Like I was saying earlier, I used always see Ed at the downtown Murrow Blvd. post office, and he was always in a positive mood…Even when I saw him just a couple of weeks ago, he was walking real slow, and was wearing a cap, and Ed never wore a cap, and you could just tell that Ed was really struggling, but he still remained positive…Ed was resilient until the end…

Ed Cobbler is gone, and when you lose Ed, you lose one of the good ones, you know what we call, one of the great ones…Thanks Ed for all of the memories you gave us, and for all of the hard work that you have done…You have earned your rest and peace…

Rest in Peace/RIP:Ed Cobbler

  1. Sorry to hear of Ed’s passing. He was a classmate at RJR but I haven’t seen him since then. Do remember him however.

  2. Ed will never be forgotten! He was an important part of the Triad Honor Flight original board of directors and one I would call friend. We met through the Guilford merchants association over 20 years ago. He will be missed!

  3. I was honored to be able to meet him thru the Triad Honor Flight. He was also a Vietnam Vet who had quite a story to tell. RIP my friend.

  4. I spent many hours volunteering with Ed for The Greensboro Sports Foundation. He was admired & respected by everyone he encountered. I am proud to be friend. He will be missed by all that knew. Blessings & condolences to his family & friends

    Regards, Dan Ledbetter

  5. Ed was a great guy to work with at GPD and a good friend. He was always kind and compassionate.

  6. Ed Cobbler’s Military Service:
Ed Cobbler of Jamestown served in the U.S. Army for three years, starting in 1965, during the Vietnam War. Cobbler was a Winston-Salem resident at the time of his service, and his rank was sergeant E-5. Here’s his story:

“I joined the U.S. Army in 1965 after graduating from high school in Winston-Salem, where I grew up. I volunteered to be an infantry soldier.

“After basic and infantry training, I was sent to Vietnam in April 1966, joining the 1st Cavalry Division, 1st Brigade, 5th Battalion, Charlie Company. We spent most of our time in the jungle on search and destroy missions involving many firefights.

“I contracted malaria and was sent to an Army hospital in Japan, almost dying. After three months, I returned to Charlie Company. I was on a helicopter enroute to join my company in the field. Before I arrived, my company was in a bad battle and we couldn’t land. My platoon, 3rd, was ambushed and wiped out, 27 dead, one wounded, only survivor.

“I spent three years in the Army, getting out as a sergeant E-5. I joined the Greensboro Police Department, 15 years, and then started ELC Investigative Services.”

  7. Ed will be greatly missed. No words can be of much comfort during this time. I grew up with Ed and Sue volunteering their time coaching our junior high and high school athletic teams at Brightwood Christian Academy. Also, was a friend and mentor to our youth at Brightwood Baptist Church. I was honored he asked me to work with him in the early years of his own business. I was young and I learned a lot from him. His life impacted so many people. My prayers go out the family.

  8. I always referred to him as Coach Cobbler. He was my flag football coach at Brightwood Christian Academy. I played on the junior varsity team for him. Always remember the practices and the excitement of going to the games and playing under the big lights at JC Park or on the road. Our junior varsity team was undefeated except for the last junior varsity game we ever played which was the championship which the other team resorted to skullduggery and flat-out cheating to beat the Brightwood Broncos JV team. One thing that I do remember most about him was he always put in his players and told them to play hard. Those were great days. One of my Fondest Memories was near the end of our last ever season of flag football we played a small team I don’t remember from where, but we absolutely shut them out. Our final score near the end of the game was over 70 points. When there was only about 5 minutes left to play, Coach Cobbler called us all in a huddle and said we are not going to shut this team out. You are going to kick that ball and they’re going to run it back for a touchdown. You’re to do your best to make them believe that you’re trying to catch them but you let them score. And that’s exactly what we did and the team went home with seven points on the board. I saw Ed Cobbler just several years ago at a restaurant and he always remembered me. And I never called him Ed or Mr Cobbler, I always called him Coach. And he will forever be in my heart my Coach.

  9. I had two varsity basketball coaches at BCA. They both passed away three days apart. I will remember the things that they taught me. So many wonderful memories

  10. I met Ed for the first time while working parking @ Greensboro Coliseum about 15 years ago. I generally parked Ed & his wife at every event they came to. We became good friends & discussed our military adventures often. I was in the Air Force near the end of the Vietnam War. Ed was an outstanding community leader who gave back a lot to the community & especially the sporting community. He will truly be missed, rest in peace my friend. My sincere condolences for his family.
