**********The original Crockett Cup, initially named the “Jim Crockett Sr. Memorial Cup Tag-Team Tournament,” was a 24-team tourney featuring some of the greatest teams in the world.

Past winners of the prestigious tournament include The Road Warriors (1986), Nikita Koloff and Dusty Rhodes (1987), Sting and Lex Luger (1988) and Jay and Mark Briscoe (2022).**********

++++++++++The modern-day NWA resurrected the tournament, 31 years after the previous event, with the fourth annual Crockett Cup on April 27, 2019, but the follow-up event in 2020 was sidelined by the COVID-19 pandemic.

It would return in 2022 as a two-night event.++++++++++

$$$$$$$$$$ The local promoter for this year’s event at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds is Bobby Fulton(James Hines), and Bobby Fulton knows a thing or two, about tag team wrestling….
Yes, Fulton knows a thing or two about tag-team wrestling. As The Fantastics, Fulton and his partner, Tommy Rogers, were the proverbial “well-oiled machine” inside a wrestling ring, knowing each other’s next move and executing high-flying aerial maneuvers with deft precision.

The two would build upon their success in the popular tournament and return to the Crockett territory in 1988-1989. Their program with Jim Cornette’s Midnight Express would produce some of the greatest tag bouts in the business during that period.

“I remember coming in the first night in Richmond,” says Fulton. “We wrestled them in a non-title match and beat them with their own move (the Rocket Launcher). We would have a lot of great matches with The Midnight Express all over the country.”

“The perfect babyface team” was how Cornette, who managed against The Fantastics on many occasions, aptly described his famous rivals. His Midnight Express’ bouts with Fulton and Rogers were tag-team clinics and considered match of the year candidates, with their work in Crockett Promotions winning feud of the year honors in 1988.$$$$$$$$$$

^^^^^^^^^^ “We are thrilled to bring the Crockett Cup tournament to Winston-Salem, and we can’t wait to see the incredible competition there,” says NWA owner Billy Corgan. “With the help of David Crockett and Bobby Fulton, plus our amazing roster of wrestlers, we aim to make this year’s tournament truly memorable and historic.”

“The winning team of the Crockett Cup is immortalized forever as one of the best tag teams ever in the sport of wrestling,” says David Crockett. “I’m also excited to once again work with Billy Corgan and the NWA team to bring this event to life. The Crockett Cup has a special place in wrestling history, and I’m honored to continue the legacy of my family with this event.” ^^^^^^^^^^

Bobby Fulton tells Mike Mooneyham of the Charleston, South Carolina Post and Courier:
“I’m 62 years old but still as passionate about the business as I was as a 5-year-old boy. I really want to see this event be so successful. I know it’s the Crockett Cup, but I want it to be a celebration, like a family reunion. People from throughout the Mid-Atlantic area will come to Winston-Salem. It will be like a family reunion where we haven’t seen each other in many, many years. We’ll get the opportunity to have that good old feeling. You can’t buy that. It’s like you’re getting ready to see a long-lost cousin that you have thought about and wanted to see. On June 3-4, this is your opportunity.”

“All roads lead to Winston-Salem,” says Fulton. “And Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Charlotte, Charleston, all these towns in North and South Carolina are ready. “It’s going to be two days of nostalgia. We’re also working on bringing some of the older guys in to do meet and greets. That’s why we’ve added a fanfest to the event. I’m really hoping that this is where the nostalgia will meet the future.”

Among the special guests scheduled are Fulton, Ronnie Garvin, Jimmy Garvin, Tully Blanchard, Baby Doll, Bill Dundee and D-Von Dudley.
