OMAHA, Neb.-Wake Forest’s miraculous college baseball season came to an end Thursday night in Omaha, Nebraska at the hands of the LSU Tigers in a walk-off, 2-0 loss.
The No. 1 Demon Deacons finished the season 54-12, losing their last two games in the College World Series, thus being eliminated one win shy of the championship series.
The No. 5 LSU Tigers move on to face No. 2 Florida in the College World Series finals, which start Saturday.
The Deacons’ battle with the Tigers was a classic pitchers’ duel between arguably the two best throwers in the country, Rhett Lowder and Paul Skenes.
Lowder, the two-time ACC pitcher of the year, threw 7.0 innings, allowing only three hits and striking out six batters while only needing 88 pitches.
Skenes is the winner of the 2023 Dick Howser Trophy, which honors the most outstanding player in NCAA Division I baseball. Opposing Lowder, he was equally dominant, if not more, going 8.0 innings with two hits allowed and nine strikeouts, while throwing 120 pitches.
Thanks to the stout pitching, the game remained tied after nine frames, forcing extra innings.
In the bottom of the 11th inning, LSU slugger Tommy White, who previously played for NC State, hammered a two-run home run to walk it off in Omaha. The Tigers celebrated their victory, as Wake Forest walked off in defeat.
