The Southern Durham High School Spartans shut out the Hillside High School Hornets 14-0 Friday night.

Southern Durham’s defense was the star Friday night, forcing three turnovers against the Hillside offense to secure their first win of the season.

After both teams went scoreless in the first quarter, Southern Durham’s Jalen McKee scored from seven yards out to put the first points on the board. A missed extra point made it 6-0 Southern Durham.

Southern Durham wouldn’t score again until the waning seconds of the third quarter, this time on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Jordan McClure to Amir Hall. A successful two-point conversion things score 14-0 with 48 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

The Hope Mills community rallied around the South View High School football team Friday night after they lost all of their equipment in a school fire.

Last week, the South View Tigers kicked off the high school football season with a dominant 47-22 victory. However, just 48 hours later, coaches arrived at the school to find smoke and flames coming from the locker room. The fire destroyed the locker room, coaches’ offices, jerseys, equipment, and other belongings.

“You start wondering, will you even play for the season? Let alone this Friday,” Rodney Brewington, South View Varsity Football Head coach said.

The fire also charred and burnt jerseys, water bottles, and a whiteboard that could be seen in a near by dumpster.

“Everything that was in the locker room, the gear they’re playing with, the coach’s offices,” Phyllis Jackson, South View Principal said.

The team said their auditorium became their locker room.

“We thought we were gonna have to wear buckets and all of the bad gear,” Christian Rutledge, player said.

But this team knows how to make a comeback.

“We just saw the Red Sea part for the South View,” Brewington said.

Friday, they’re beaming in bright new jerseys and helmets.

Donations from the community and alumni poured in from all over the country in just four days.

“It was a symphony full of adults working in concert to help these kids play,” Brewington said.

The crowd cheered for the team that finally got their chance. Friday Night Lights are back, brighter than ever.

There’s no official word on what caused the fire.

The principal of South View High School said assessments are still ongoing.
