Friday Football Finish: Conference Games are here and we are getting much closer to Playoff Time as Steven Murray shines bright for Eastern Guilford and the fans really would like to see Dudley vs. Grimsley

Lots of talk this week, about a Hypothetical Game between Grimsley and Dudley…The fans want it, and who would win it??? Dudley vs. Grimsley…Grimsley is a 4-A team and Dudley is a 3-A team, so unless they can come up with nice home-and-home non-conference game with the Panthers and the Whirlies, they won’t be seeing each other any time soon…Still makes you wonder who would win, if some how, some way, they could get together and play a game against each other this season…Would be a barn-barner, that is for sure….
Do you take Grimsley, or do you take Dudley???

Most of the high school football polls, with Grimsley and Dudley in them, have Grimsley ranked ahead of Dudley….I mentioned the idea of a Grimsley-Dudley hypothetical game at least three weeks ago, on the Thursday evening Football in Focus Show…I brought up the idea of Dudley vs. Grimsley right there, and many would say, “This game is not going to happen, so why even talk about it???”

We talk about because we can, and because it is a true topic of interest….The talk will continue, until the game finally happens….And by the time it happens, this game may not be as big as it is, right now…I remember back when Keenan Allen was at Grimsley for his freshman year of high school, and Grimsley went over to Dudley back then, with Keenan and his brother Zack Maynard at QB, and Dudley took that game….That was a real rocket blast of a game there…I also remember Northern Guilford having Keenan, and the Nighthawks went over to Dudley, but they could not beat Dudley….

The QB matchup with Andrew Attmore II, the former Grimsley QB, now at QB for Dudley vs. Faison Brandon, a sophomore, and the current Grimsley QB…Brandon is the better runner, but Attmore is the better passer…Dudley would have the overall edge at WR, with CJ Neely, Nasir Newkirk, Kordell Bartley, and Jerron Blackwell….Grimsley has the super quality WRs in Alex Taylor and Terrell Anderson, but Dudley has MORE…At RB Grimsley would have the edge with Mitchell Summers back there…Dudley has good RBs, but not on the overall level as Summers….

So it is neck-and-neck so far, and I do think the more we break it down, the more we would see that this matchup is really pretty even…..The overall edge would go to the team that would have the home field advantage…If this was played at Grimsley’s Bob Jamieson Stadium, the Whirlies would have a huge advantage, but say the game was played over at Dudley, inside the Panthers’ Tarpley Stadium, then the edge goes right to the Dudley Panthers…

But why not move the game to N.C. A&T, and let the Aggies host this game…I was there for at least 2-3 Dudley-Smith games at N.C. A&T back in the day, and there was one Friday night when we had over 20,000 fans in there for a high school game of all things…Yes, a high school football game that was drawing 20,000 fans…

It would be that way for Dudley vs. Grimsley too, as long as they were to play that game soon….When the current players start to get away, and graduate, and then move on to college, there will not be the same attraction that there is now/this year….

Need to play this game NOW…..While Alex Taylor and Terrell Anderson are still around, and while Neely, Newkirk, Bartley, Blackwell, and others are still at Dudley…Not sure if the level of talent is going to stay this red-hot at both schools beyond say, 2024…

May just have to wait and see, and we may not be seeing much…But, there will be the game next week….Grimsley vs. Northwest Guilford…How much does NWG have for Grimsley??? Tanner Ballou at QB, Trent Cloud at WR, Malique Jones at RB, hey, this is a peak year for Northwest Guilford…And with a peak, we see that NWG should be ready to give Grimsley a very challenge with the NWG offense, but not sure about how NWG will hold up on defense….

This should be the very biggest test for Grimlsey in the Metro Conference this season….The biggest test of the year for Dudley should come in their very last game of the regular season, when the Dudley Panthers go to Eastern Guilford, to face off with the EG Wildcats…

Grimsley’s biggest game next week vs. NWG, and Dudley’s biggest game coming later with Eastern Guilford…Now you can see why there has been so much conversation about Grimsley vs. Dudley…Even though it is a Hypothetical Game, it still is best game of the year, in the county….

And so how much resistance will Northwest Guilford give the Grimsley Whirlies???? Again, NWG should be more than adequate on offense, but their defense will be tested to no end….

So, if the NWG-Grimsley game does not turn out all that great, will the Eastern Guilford-Dudley game be any better??? Eastern Guilford has a receiver named Steven Murray and he is as good as any receiver in the county….As good as Taylor, Anderson, Neely, Newkirk, Bartley, Blackwell and MORE…

And how do I know Murray is just as good as the others…Well, I have seen them all, and I have seen them all since back when they were just young football players, and I am telling you, Steven Murray is right there with the others….I am qualified to make these kind of assessements, and here I go again….Murray can really get it DONE….His QB Jackson Jones does a very good job of getting him the ball, and Murray makes himself a very solid and viable target….Murray was not a full strength for the full game vs. Western Alamance last week, but he was at 100% this week vs. Northeast Guilford…

The only problem for Eastern Guilford, is that there is only ONE Steven Murray…Grimsley has the two top receivers right now in Taylor and Anderson, and Dudley has the full quartet, with Neely, Newkirk, Bartley, and Blackwell, plus Dudley also has DJ Parker out there at WR when they want/need him…

But again, Eastern Guilford just has the ONE Steven Murray, but let me tell you, the ‘Cats would not trade him off for any other receiver, they really like what they have, in the junior WR/DB/KR man Steven Murray…Murray is the REAL DEAL, and we are here to continue our campaign for Murray….Know the name, and remember the name of Steven Murray…

Murray was our Steak n Shake Offensive Player of the Game on Friday night, for his work vs. the NEG Rams, in the EG Wildcats 48-0 victory over the previously unbeaten Rams…Murray with 5 catches for 95 yards and 2 Touchdowns…Murray also had a pick on defense, and he took a punt back for a TD, and that one was called back, due to a penalty….Murray helping the EG ‘Cats load up vs. NEG on Friday night…

The EG QB Jackson Jones went 12-18 for 207 yards and three TD passes…Jones going 68 yards and 8 yards to Murray for touchdowns, and he also had a 22-yard TD pass to Jassi Hackett…Plus for the EG ‘Cats you had Javen Cole with 13 carries for 70 yards and 3 TD runs, while Caleb Creech carried the ball 10 times for 61 yards…This was great night to get Cole integrated back into, and running hard for the EG offense…
(Jones also 6-7 on his PAT kicks.)

From Eastern Guilford, Shade Green claimed the Steak n Shake Defensive Player of the Game honors….

For the NEG Rams, coming in from Don Tilley’s stats….
Jadyn Tate with 11 carries for 40 rushing yards…
Jacob Freeman with 2 receptions for 57 yards…..

And for the Don Tilley TD Tally:
4:04 First Quarter:Steven Murray with a 68-yard TD pass from Jackson Jones, and the Jones PAT kick is Good…EG 7, NEG 0
1:31 First Quarter:Jassi Hackett grabs a 22-yard TD pass from Jackson Jones, and the Jones PAT kick is Good..EG 14, NEG 0
11:42 Second Quarter:DJ Southerland runs back a punt 53 yards for the TD, and the Jones PAT kick is Good…EG 21, NEG 0
6:52 Second Quarter:Javen Cole on a 4-yard TD run and the Jones PAT kick is blocked…EG 27, NEG 0
3:57 Third Quarter:Steven Murray on an 8-yard TD catch from Jones, and the Jones PAT kick is good…EG 34, NEG 0
10:20 Fourth Quarter:Javen Cole with a 1-yard TD run, and the Jones PAT kick is Good…EG 41, NEG 0
6:12 Fourth Quarter:Javen Cole gets in on a 13-yard TD run, and the Jones kick is Good…EG 48, NEG 0

Halftime:EG 27, NEG O…Final:EG 48, NEG 0….
EG(3-1/1-0)….NEG(3-1/0-1)

And there you go, that’s our writeup for tonight, and like we said, the Playoffs with Jim Mora leading us in, are just around the corner, and we gave you another good jolt of high school football talk for tonight, and for the week as a whole…..

  1. Dudley’s Qb1 has more game experience. 14-1, 2 Metro 4A undefeated Conference Championship’s all JV and State Champ. Since being at Dudley, 9-3, (7-0) undefeated Mid State 3A Conference and Dudley’s Offensive MVP. Leading the c/o 24 offensive production efficiency. He’s the least spoken on in this article but the only common denominator! His Rb’s do the running that’s why they are Rb’s. As the Great TB stated…’There’s risk involved with running, that’s why I played so long!!

  2. You are right about the risks, especially when you are running inside against those big tackles and other linemen, and those linebackers don’t like runners either…

  3. Would love to see a sandlot game of 7 on 7 with Grimsley vs. Dudley. I think you could sell tickets to something like that. Make it an event and it would be great fundraiser.

Taylor and Anderson taking their throws from Brandon and then turning around and playing defense on Neely, Newkirk, Bartley and Blackwell, with Attmore heaving long for his Dudley receivers.

I would pay to see that game right there. That would be the game, and you don’t need no running backs when you have talent like that out there. Bring it on and let’s get it on.

The best players in the state right there and Charlotte can’t keep up with any of the kids that I just mentioned. No way man.

    Let’s do it!

  4. All coming in from a previous post on Grimsley Whirlies football, from Mike Fanning at GreensboroSports.com….

Y’all no Grimsley doesn’t have a passing attack. 2 power 5 receivers that don’t have 200 yards in 3 games.SMH Dudley has 3 with over 200 yards. Love the way Dudley attacks the Mismatch with those receivers. We are gonna have to admit Coach Hall is the best OC around. We need to talk about that more.

Dudley can’t run the ball like Grimsley. Grimsley would smoke Dudley

@Jerome Dudley’s two RBs don’t get fed the rock as much but best believe they’re more skilled than Grimsley’s RBs. The stats may not show it but they’re more versatile and can run routes just as good if not better than any receiver around. They haven’t gotten fed the ball on 4 consecutive drives in the red zone to stuff the stat sheet like Grimsley did for their Rb but best believe they can run the ball. Grimsley would not smoke Dudley. J. Blackwell about took Grimsley down last season as a sophomore by himself playing for page and now he’s on a loaded Dudley team with skill players to match up with Grimsley’s. Cut it out!! Grimsley doesn’t have guys like Bartley or anyone with real speed on that team either. I would argue to say Dudley has more athletes.

Saying Grimsley would smoke Dudley is a stretch and Truth is right. Grimsley has 2 power 5 receivers. And the QB can’t get it to them. Dudley has ATHLETES all over the field with speed! And guess what?! They’re all JUNIORS…LOL.

I may be putting the horse before the cart, and looking too far ahead, but I think Jerron Blackwell will be Dudley’s starting QB next season, in 2024….

They are both very talented teams. Play calling isn’t the same though. Grimsley does a great job doing what they do. It’s super conservative. Dudley has more ways to attack with multiple guys who can GO!

It would be a good game but from watching them both, I got Dudley by 14

about time for coach Hall to take over as a HC somewhere very great coach

Would be a good game but I have Grimsley winning by 10 to 14 points, Grimsley defense get them the edge to me

We have this same argument every year. It would be nice if Dudley were large enough to still be in the conference. The way transfers are going Page might lose enough transfers to fall out and move Dudley back in. BTW Grimsley would win that game all day any day.

    September 15, 2023 at 3:46 pm (Edit)
Just schedule each other and stop running. Everyone Knows Dudley has been calling out Grimsley for years but Grimsley keeps ducking them. Make it a non conference game

    Gfan says:
    September 15, 2023 at 6:30 pm (Edit)
Yeah Rolesville, Mt Tabor, and Reagan are cupcakes right? Give me a break. Ain’t nobody scared Dudley is just not as good as the elite 4A teams.

Dudley is better than all 3 schools you named but continue on with the excuses.

No way Jerron plays QB at Dudley, one of the rumor reason he left Page is cause they wanted him to be QB. Just sayin

  5. Dudley should be in the Metro…they have a higher enrollment than at least 3 of the current members yet somehow they get to stay 3A…and it’s been that way for years.

Everyone wants to see a Dudley/Grimsley game. It’s a shame. Imagine all of these transfers playing each other in a game that might be close…instead of mercy ruling everyone in their respective conferences.

  6. This game didn’t happened this year so it won’t happen. Grimsley would be crazy to take that game next year and they know that as Dudley would be stacked. We will end up talking about this same topic next year and for years to come until neither team is not this good at the same time. I will say this though, it’s cool to see the 336 has a chance to win all 4 classifications. Mt. Airy will more than likely run through 1A. Reidsville has a good chance in 2A and then you have Dudley and Grimsley. At the end of the day you can’t help but root for both schools to take it because the 704 is almost unbearable to listen to sometimes on different sites. Good luck Grimsley and Dudley, go all the way.

  7. Please fill me in QB1 has all the tools why isn’t any offers coming. Has he been to any camps because that’s when they are able to see the full package maybe someone is missing something. We see the stats everyday. Can’t be mad at others. We know Bryce Baker and Fazion Brandon got the offers but they got them from camps strong arms and mobile. Can someone answer this with true knowledge.

  8. Facts you are absolutely right we should root for each other but it’s the adults. I see these same kids all the time hanging and training with each other. Jealousy comes in when offer’s don’t come in. Glad these you mean are going to school free. Get back to the old days when all 4 city schools played 4a ball then no excuses from neither side. Til then stop the game will not happen until it want matter so keep the negative comments away and enjoy the success these Two schools are having. Everyone else in the city has been very quiet.
