Incident at Dudley HS on Friday night brings more concern to Dudley Community, but we know there are good things going on at Dudley HS and our guest from last Thursday, Latrell Wilson, is proof of the Panthers’ Positivity(Info from Special Meeting on Monday night, at James B. Dudley HS)

Trouble over on Lincoln Street after the Dudley-Smith football game on Friday night, and it is very disturbing that a life was lost, but even in this time of turmoil, we still see Positivity from the Dudley Panthers program…Their football team at Dudley HS is unbeaten at (6-0), and back on Thursday night, during our Football in Focus Show from the Tee It Up Indoors golf shop on Battleground Avenue, we interviewed Dudley High School senior linebacker Latrell Wilson, and Wilson is one of the sharpest kids we have talked to over the years…

This young man, Latrell Wilson is part of what is right with our Guilford County Schools, and he carried the banner for the Dudley Panthers football program, and in doing so, this young man makes Dudley Panthers football shine…Very intelligent young man, and a very well-spoken young man, and it was a pleasure to have him join us back on Thursday evening….

The Dudley High School community often times is getting a bad rap, but I do not believe you can wrap up everything going on over in around Dudley, and lay it at the feet of the football team…This is not a football team problem, but yet the football team and the James B. Dudley High School itself, seem to get the bad rap, every time another one of these incidents takes place, and the bad rap on Dudley, is misplaced…

The area around the school is a high traffic area for large events, like when the football games are happening…The Dudley-Smith football game always draws a large crowd….When they used to hold the game down at N.C. A&T, crowds would reach upwards of 15-20 thousand people, and I don’t remember any major disturbances related to those Panthers-Eagles games…

Maybe times are changing, and today’s landscape for violence is growing in the wrong direction, but I don’t think that should cause the general public to lay the blame on the Dudley High School and its students, or on the Dudley Panthers football team…

Like we are saying, we have seen proof of what is right in our Guilford County Schools, and we have seen the Proof of Panthers Positivity in young men representing the Dudley Panthers, and in particular we have seen that young man Latrell Wilson leading his school and his team in a very positive and respectful direction….

Good things are coming out of James B. Dudley High School, and we present Panther Latrell Wilson, as a Prime Example of the Panther Positivity…This kid is doing the right things and we can all be proud of him and what he presents and represents…Good things are coming out of Dudley HS, and good things are coming from the Dudley Panthers football team, and Latrell Wilson is showing us, What Is Right With Our Guilford County Schools….

CLICK BELOW for our Interview with Latrell Wilson from the Tee It Up Indoors golf shop, from back on Thursday night, right before the Dudley-Smith football game, at James B. Dudley High School, on Friday night….I think you will agree with me, that in 2023, we can still see good things like this young football player, Latrell Wilson, coming from our local Dudley HS….Please take time to watch some of this video and you can listen and see, that Latrell Wilson is doing The Right Things….

from Bryant Roche, with the News and Record, with what was going on, over at Dudley HS on Friday night….
GREENSBORO — An unidentified person who was shot near Dudley High School on Friday night has died.

A Greensboro police official confirmed to local Fox affiliate WGHP — the news gathering partner for the News & Record and the Winston-Salem Journal — that four other people were wounded during the shooting and taken to a local hospital.

It’s unknown what led to the attack.

It’s also the second such incident at Dudley. In August, police responded to fights among spectators during football scrimmages between multiple schools. Officers later detained two juveniles in the parking lot area and recovered two handguns.

That incident thrust security issues into the spotlight as school administrators and law enforcement across the Triad vowed to make safety a “top priority” at high school football games.

It also was reported that as events unfolded, a car drove onto a sidewalk on the stadium’s east side. There, a man was lying on the ground to the shock of bystanders. He was later taken to a hospital. It’s not known if he was one of the shooting victims.

And on the Latrell Wilson support system….Thought I would close out this post with the Comments of Support that were coming in for Latrell, when he was named our Week Five Steak n Shake Defensive Player of the Week….Latrell Wilson(Dudley HS)…..Having that support system, and that community that is there backing you up, and Watching Your Back, can make a big difference, and Latrell Wilson has earned that support…..

Here is what was being on Monday night at a special meeting at Dudley High School:
‘Our kids are hurting’: Dudley stands together grieving, figuring out next steps

Principal Marcus Gause led a community meeting in the auditorium at Dudley High School in Greensboro on Monday.

from Nancy McLaughlin, with the News and Record at www.greensboro.com:
GREENSBORO — The Dudley High School Community.

They came together to grieve Monday, figuring out what’s next for the place that was the city’s Black high school during segregation and remains as a community seat many decades later.

Parents. Preachers. Politicians.

At the front of the auditorium stood Principal Marcus Gause, who had tended to his “1,503 amazing young minds” all day and called this last-minute meeting for the parents, volunteers — a community still mourning over the loss of life and trauma inflicted upon their campus after Friday’s football game, when a man was shot and later pronounced dead, and shrapnel from a discharge injured a student from the rival school.

“Our kids are hurting,” Gause said. “Like, really hurting.”

Gause said he was hurting, too. He had gone from angry to sad to tired to sobbing over the weekend.

“It angered me, it was hurtful to me, because regardless of the times … I don’t expect for these things to happen to our kids,” Gause said as people including state Rep. Amos Quick, state Sen. Gladys Robinson, City Council members, including Sharon Hightower, and retired Superior Court Judge Steve Allen, now a pastor in the community, looked on from their seats.

A car connected to the suspect would strike others, causing non-life-threatening injuries, while leaving a city in disbelief.

“Someone who appears not to be related to Dudley, or the game, came in,” Mike Richey, assistant superintendent of school safety and emergency management in Guilford County Schools told the 100 or so people in the audience. (Information has been changed to correct an error. See correction at bottom of story. (5:30 p.m. Oct, 3, 2023)

There was a security plan for the game, a friendly city rivalry. The number of uniformed and plain clothes officers and how many people they could handle had been discussed and discussed again.

“I’m trying not to cry,” said Ch-Hara Pearson, a Dudley mother whose son was one of the students hit by the vehicle. “I never thought I would be that parent to get that call.”

An elderly man, his voice breaking, called the man who died a friend and fellow volunteer who was looking to help out more at the school, where he was also training to be a referee. He was waiting for a ride from the stadium, the man told the crowd.

“He was training to be a referee, and he was waiting for me, for a ride home,” the man said before another man stepped up to hug him as he broke down crying.

So much of the conversation centered on the students and their healing.

Like Pearson, the parent, some spoke of not wanting this moment, this tradition, to be taken away from the students for something that they did not do.

This should been their week, as this was to be their homecoming week. Others said they were mentally spent, and needed time to heal before the celebration.

Older students were freshmen at the start of the COVID years. Now, it was time for one of their milestone moments.

“Can we allow them time to process what has happened to them as well?” said an educator in the audience, who said she was one of the student government advisors.

As part of the discussion of how to move forward, Gause had asked how they could make it up for students later. There were discussions about cancelling the annual parade and moving forward with inside events, that could be better controlled.

“How can we go about giving students the homecoming they deserve?” Gause said.

Gause also solicited comments from the audience about what the school community could do.

Some in the audience spoke of shutting down the campus to incoming traffic with a certain amount of time left in games and not letting people hang around in their cars while the game is going on. Staggering exits. Others suggested having officers on bikes riding through the crowd, or lining the main road through campus with flashing police lights.

They talked about how it was a society problem that ended up on their campus — easy access to guns, one person chimed in.

“I promised the students this isn’t our last conversation,” Gause said of meeting with them earlier in the day.

  1. What’s so frustrating is that the School Administrators, AD, Teachers have done so much to make the Football Games safer. Clear Pocketbooks & Hand Purses, Metal Detectors at the one way to come into the Stadium. Closing off the Visitors Entrances. No Congregating along the Frences and Concession Stands. There was repeated calls on the intercom. Asking that people to stop congregating along the fences and find a seat in the bleachers. Every home game at the start of the 4th Quarter, The announcer makes repeated announcements telling
the young people if they don’t have a ride to call or text for their ride to be making a way to the school to pick the students up Immediately after the game.. When the game is over, You have teachers, administrators and the Greensboro Police Department Telling everybody to make way to their vehicles. They tell the young people repeatedly there will be no congregation or hanging around, Make your way to your ride.. It is a heavy police presence at the Dudley games. For most part, Half of that crowd is 40 and above. Elderly People that have supported Dudley for 10-20-30-40-50 years, Former Students, Family Members & Friends of the Team. People just coming to enjoy a game and fellowship.

Coach Davis and his Team focus is trying to stay focus and try to win a Championship. But for some reason it is a few that want to bring this negative deadly energy over to the grounds of James Benson Dudley. Even young people that even don’t attend Dudley. Something in their brains or lack of cells to bring this mess over here. People wanting to aired grievances or something knee jerked. All I know it’s tragic, frustrating and down right pathetic that everyone just can’t put down the anger and malice and just enjoy some football and the bands. The people doing this, you are ruining what should be a joyful victory and celebration. Causing instead pain, horror and grief. Shame On You!!! Stay home of you not there to watch a football game and chill out.

You cause embarrassment to the Dudley Community and Pain to the decease and injured. Smdh!!!

  2. Great Article Andy thank you for putting that out there
You are the best and have been for a long time
We need more people like you and this world would come together
    Thanks

  3. Thank you Andy for the positive reaction instead of a nuclear reaction. Prayers for the wounded and deceased. Prayers for peace

  4. Some real good and important information coming out of that meeting at Dudley High School on Monday night….Big night planned for Dudley and the Dudley Panther Community this Friday night, with Homecoming…

If somebody is out there and can agree with me, do like Big Poppa Pump Scott Steiner did, and “Hollar If You Hear Me”, of if “You Can Smell What The Jock is Cooking”(Jock Lobotamata), or if you know “That’s The Bottom Line, because Stone Cold Steve Austin said so”…. The bottom line is, the only beef I have ever had with Dudley HS is that stoplight leaving the campus on Lincoln Street at East Gate City Blvd….That stoplight stays red longer than Red Foxx told his Aunt Esther jokes, and I mean you sit at the red light for what seems like a Racoon’s Age…

And then when that stoplight finally turns GREEN, it stays green for just about 20 seconds….When it goes green, you better hit it, or you won’t get it…(The Light)…I have been going to games over at Dudley since back around 1992, and that stoplight has been the only thing to ever slow me down when it comes time to go home….

Dudley is a great place and it almost like a second home to those who have been covering the Panthers games for many years…People like Brian Hall from News 2, Kevin Connolly from FOX 8, Joe Daniels from the Peacemaker and few others have been on that beat for several years, and Dudley is still a great place to be in 2023….

(For the best of my knowledge, the Stoplight is a City of Greensboro problem , and not a Dudley HS problem.)
