Pender, Hobbton set state high school football scoring record; Patriots beat Wildcats 106-83

BURGAW — Pender and Hobbton lined up for a football game last Friday, but a basketball-like scoring game broke out.

Pender exploded for a 106-83 victory in a nonconference matchup as the teams combined to shatter the previous state record for combined points in a game with 189.

The contest didn’t even go four quarters as it ended with just over a minute left in regulation as the field lights at Pender shut off.

Pender (4-3) led 40-29 after the first quarter and 54-49 at halftime and then outscored Hobbton 16-14 in the third quarter to take a 70-63 lead before the fourth quarter saw another scoring explosion with Pender taking it by a 36-20 score.

Hobbton (3-4) was part of the previous state record as well, set in the first week of the 2021 season when it lost 80-73 to Midway as the teams combined for 153 points. In week two of that season, the Wildcats came within a point of tying the record in a 90-62 win over Trask.

Pender also set the state record for rushing yards in a game with 912 versus Hobbton.

Jeremiah Johnson ran for 377 yards and six touchdowns on 44 carries, followed by Jassiah Hill with 291 yards and six touchdowns on 17 carries.

Mark Rawls ran for 97 yards on five carries, Corryon Moore ran for 82 yards on two carries, and Demari Morgan ran for 82 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries.

The Patriots averaged 12 yards per carry on 76 carries.

There were a combined 26 touchdowns in the game.

The teams are no strangers to putting up big numbers on the scoreboard.

Pender defeated Lejeune 88-34 in the first game of the season.

Hobbton scored 64 points in a game this season, hit 69 in a game last season, and went over 50 points five times in 2021. In 2020, the Wildcats fell 60-40 to East Carteret in the first round of the state playoffs. They scored more than 50 twice in 2019.
