UNCG Volleyball Set for Homecoming Weekend

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team will continue The Southern Conference (SoCon) schedule with UNCG’s homecoming weekend this week. The Spartans will take on Mercer on Friday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. and Samford on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 5 p.m. in Fleming Gymnasium.

Friday’s game will give UNCG students the chance to win Apple Air Pods or an Apple watch. Saturday’s game will be a whiteout game, fans are encouraged to wear white. Saturday’s game will also recognize alumni in attendance and UNCG volleyball players will be signing autographs after the game.

Quick Hitters for the Spartans

UNCG heads into the weekend with a 1-18 overall record and 0-8 in the SoCon.
Head Coach Felicia Turner gained her first win as a head coach on Friday, Sept. 8 with a 3-0 sweep over USC Upstate at the Black & Gold Classic, hosted by App State.
After last weekend’s competition, the squad is halfway through the SoCon schedule as they have competed against each conference opponent once.
The team most recently took straight set losses on the road against Western Carolina and Furman.
Mallory Meers led UNCG as the setter last week with 28 assists over six sets for a 4.67 assists per set average. Meers leads the squad with 323 assists on the season.
Mya Wood led UNCG as the libero with 26 digs over six sets for a 4.33 digs per set average last week. Wood continues to lead the Spartans as the libero with 224 digs on the 2023 campaign.
Hallie Cook led UNCG offensively last weekend with 14 kills over six sets played for a 2.33 kills per set average.
Aylin Baran leads the Spartans on the season offensively with 198 kills. Baran is seventh in the SoCon with a 3.08 kills per set average.
Daija Jackson stands out at the net for the team with 38.0 total blocks.
Scouting Mercer
The Bears currently stand in third place in the conference with a 6-2 SoCon record and 10-9 overall. The team is currently on a four-game winning streak with three of those wins coming at home. Most recently, Mercer defeated Samford on the road in a five-set thrilling match and then took down Chattanooga in straight sets at home last Saturday.

Skyler Bumpers leads the Bears and is second in the conference this season with a .391 hitting percentage. Bumpers also leads her squad with 64.0 total blocks. Kylee Quigley leads the team in two statistical categories this season with 211 kills and 30 service aces. Kierra McCarles stands out as the setter this season with 388 assists on the 2023 stanza.

The Spartans lead in the overall series against the Bears at 13-8. The two teams met earlier this season in Macon, Ga., when Mercer defeated UNCG in straight sets.

Scouting Samford
The Bulldogs come into the weekend at fifth place in the conference with a 4-4 SoCon record and 9-11 overall. Samford went 1-1 at home last weekend with a five-set loss to Mercer and a straight-set win over Chattanooga.

Gracie Lynn Butler leads the Bulldogs and is second in the SoCon in two statistical categories with 324 kills and 361.5 points. Lexi Thatcher leads Samford as the setter with 642 assists this season. Kate Wonus and Kate Morgan lead the Bulldogs on the defensive end this season with 56.0 blocks and 277 digs, respectively.

The Bulldogs lead in the overall series against UNCG with a 22-9 overall record. The two teams first met in both of their conference openers earlier this season. Samford took that match in Birmingham over four sets.

Samford will make a stop in Charleston, S.C., to take on The Citadel on Friday, Oct. 20 at 5 p.m., before coming to Greensboro.

The Spartans will compete at Chattanooga on Thursday, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. and return home to take on ETSU on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 5 p.m., in Fleming Gymnasium. Saturday’s game will be “Daddy Daughter Day” and UNCG volleyball players will sign postgame autographs for fans after the game.
