He was one of the top educators in the city, and he was the former punter for the N.C. A&T Aggies football team, back in the early 60’s, and went on to become, The Voice of N.C. A&T Aggies football in the late 60’s, the 70’s, the 80’s and the 90’s…
Spencer Gwynn said, “This Is Aggie Football” and that que line resonated over the airwaves of 1510 WEAL, “The Big Wheel Black Gospel Station” and the home of N.C. A&T Aggies football for many, many years…Hornsby Howell, Mo Forte, Jim McKinley, and many other coaches were there to lead the Aggies, but one thing remained constant for nearly 40 years….The voices of Spencer Gwynn and Mel Swann calling/announcing N.C. A&T Aggies football…
“This Is Aggie Football”…I heard that line listening to A&T football with Spencer/Spence Gwynn for day and night for a long, long time…Many times when there were night games, they would move the games from 1510 AM WEAL, and over to 97.1 WQMG….Power-Power-Power-Power 97….
Spencer Gwynn was an educator with well over the average of 30 years, in the Greensboro, then the Guilford County Schools System…Spencer Gwynn spent many years over at Peck Elementary School, there on Florida Street…Spencer Gwynn was a stern but very fair and professional educator…Pretty sure Spencer Gwynn rose to level of top leader at Peck Elementary School…Peck Elementary principal, Spencer Gwynn….Always learning, and just learning now, that Spencer Gwynn was also the assistant principal at Grimsley High School….
He and Mel Swann both served and taught in the local schools system for a generation and more…Mel has Swann Middle School named in his honor..Mel is also deceased….
Spencer Gwynn and Mel Swann were, and have been for decades synonymous with N.C. A&T Aggie football…George Ragsdale, Dwaine Board, Alan Hooker, the list of names goes on and on, and those are just a few of the key names that Spencer Gwynn called over the airwaves for all those years…Ragsdale later with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Board with the San Francisco 49ers, Hooker briefly with the Dallas Cowboys….All of those young men were with the Aggies and Spencer Gwynn, and then they went on to the NFL…
Spencer Gwynn was also a scratch golfer…He loved to play golf, and he’d jump at the chance to hit the links on a good day, or on a bad day too…Spencer Gwynn was again the punter for the A&T Aggies back in his college playing days..
Gwynn lived life to the fullest, and he did get his monies worth…Spencer Gwynn will long be remembered, and many, just like me, will never forget and will say long live the Spencer Gwynn line and we will say it again one more time for Spence:
“This Is Aggie Football”…..Yes, “This Is Aggie Football”….
RIP:Spencer Gwynn

He was a truly great man.
Spencer was a giant of a man in size, personality and heart! What a huge void his passing leaves and what a treasured friend he was to me. Many a beer and story shared, some with laughter and some with tears but always with a shared respect for the experience. I loved the man!! Shine on, Spencer Gwynn!!
Mr. Gwynn was the principal of Lincoln Junior High, (Academy at Lincoln) during the ‘80’s. Wonderful person!
