Guilford College Football Finishes Season at Bridgewater

The Guilford College football team traveled to Bridgewater College for the final game of the season. The Quakers fell to the Eagles, 47-15.

Bridgewater received the opening kickoff and quickly went to work. The Eagles pieced together an 11-play drive over 4:53, going 76 yards for the touchdown. A successful extra point gave them a 7-0 lead.

Guilford had a sluggish start on the offensive side and went three-and-out as the home side started its next drive on the Quaker 42. Four plays later, Bridgewater scored once more to jump ahead 14-0.

Punts by both teams gave Guilford the ball at its own 31 to start the third drive for GC. On the first play from scrimmage, Bailey Baker found JuJu Rice over the middle as Rice was off to the races and scored a 69-yard touchdown. A Burke Nettles’ point after try was good to cut the deficit in half, 14-7 with 5:09 left in the first.

The Eagles responded with a 12-play, 67-yard drive to increase their lead back to 14 (21-7). Over the next five drives, the two teams punted the ball twice, two turnovers on downs and a fumble placed the hosts at the Guilford 49.

BC pieced together five plays to move the ball 36 yards before Jack Hendren made a 30-yard field goal to increase the advantage to 17 (24-7) with 5:04 left in the first half.

Following another Quaker punt, the Eagles wasted little time and used six plays to go 43 yards and score the final touchdown of the first half. At the break, Bridgewater led 31-7.

Guilford started the second half with the ball but the offensive struggles continued as the team went three-and-out. Bridgewater was posed to score but on a 24-yard field goal attempt, Tristan Bailey came around the edge and blocked the kick. The ball was recovered in the endzone for a touchback.

The Quaker offense took the field and became a pass heavy team down by 24. Baker went 6-8 on the drive for 80 yards including an eight-yard pass to Jay Daniels for a touchdown. GC went for the two-point conversion as Baker rolled to his right and found Brodey King for the try. Guilford trailed 31-15 with 6:11 left in the third.

The Eagles dictated the style of play for the remainder of the game, holding the Quakers to just 90 yards over the final 16-plus minutes while adding on 16 points to secure the 42-point victory.

Guilford finishes the season 2-8 overall with a conference record of 0-7.
