Can we all agree that the whole 336 needs to come out and support both teams ?I’m so tired of the back and forth when they are the only two teams standing. A lot of these young men have been playing together since peewee ball and are really good friends. Both teams are in an uphill battle at the 4th spot because of weak conferences. Wouldn’t that be a great story both can bring home a championship. The oldest schools in the city. Let’s go Panthers!!! Let’s go Whirlies!!! 336 let’s go.
I remember back in 2016 when Dudley played Fayetteville Cape Fear down in Raleigh. What stood out to me was how the whole Community of Fayetteville/Cumberland County came together to support Cape Fear. Fans and Students from all the High Schools in that area. Just something you don’t see honestly in Guilford, Forsyth, Alamance & Rockingham Counties when a team is going far in the playoffs. I hope games Friday is sold out with Students, Fans, Families and Teachers…..No incidents, just noise and cheers.
Community-type game I will remember locally was back in 1997 and the game was for the NCHSAA Regional Championship…The winner of this game would get A.L. Brown out of Kannapolis in the Championship the next week in Chapel Hill…
The game was Northeast Guilford at Dudley HS on that first Friday night in December back in 1997…The Tarpley Stadium there at James B. Dudley High School was packed…Fans standing all along the fences inside the stadium, all around the stadium…Like Standing Room only…Very cold on that Friday night….Clear skies with no wind, but temps in the lower 30’s…Man it was cold/chilly…Don’t think I ever sat down that night…
Dudley had Braxton Williams at RB and NEG had Carlos McNeil at RB…It was a battle, but in the end, the Northeast Guilford Rams pulled out the victory and headed to Chapel Hill to meet Nick Maddox and Kannapolis in the 3-A State Title game…
Dudley had upset the higher seeded Western Guilford Hornets the week before at Western Guilford HS, and Dudley took over the home field advantage game vs. NEG…Dudley had gotten on a roll, and they nearly took out the NEG Rams, but NEG coach Tommy Pursley had his Rams ready…
Again the Tarpley Stadium was flat-out packed and it was a great community game with fans coming from all over town and from throuhout Guilford County to watch this battle…
Dudley had some good cross-county battles in the later rounds of the playoffs vs. the Ragsdale Tigers in the 2000’s and beyond, with Ragsdale Tigers LBs Walt Sparks and Billy Stone having real big games back then but Dudley always won those Ragsdale games at The Tarp….
The night Dudley stopped Elijah Hood and Charlotte Catholic on a 4th and 1 play at around the Dudley 23-yard line was a true classic….That sent Dudley to the State Title Game…
Dudley at Charlotte Catholic and Dudley at Davie County back in the days were also classics, just like the night Dudley got Oxford Webb and TJ Thorpe at Oxford, with Ricky Lewis Jr. running wild…Hendon Hooker ran and threw wild that night up at Davie County….And Dudley got a huge scoop and score fumble recovery that night down at Charlotte Catholic…
Many times, the games leading up to the Championship Game were better than the Championship Game itself…
But I still say, for a Guilford County Instant Classic, the Northeast Guilford at Dudley game back in 1997 was one of the best I have ever attended…The County really showed out that night, for that game…….
And for sure, be out there to support both Grimsley and Dudley on Friday night…Two oustanding football programs at home, and the fans/all fans can benefit from it….
I have Grimsley and Dudley both winning. I take the Panthers and the Whirlies and will stick with and support them throughout the playoffs. My team is just outside the county but I will go with and fully support the Guilford County teams now. Go far Dudley and Grimsley.
Other than the 1997 Game Between NE & Dudley, I was at the other battles with Ragsdale & Dudley when they had Ricky Lewis around 2006-08. I really remember that battle with Charlotte Catholic & Elijah Hood and Dudley in 2013. Dudley stopping him on that 4 & 1 inside Dudley’s Red Zone. That Oxford Webb game at Webb in 2007 and Dudley…..the 2013 at Dudley & 2016 at Catholic in the Western Conf Finals was Cold as heck. But that 2007 game with Oxford Webb in the Eastern 3A Finals was the most painful freezing game I had ever been too. Man I was crying because it was so rock solid ice block cold. I remember Dudley’s Band trying to play their instruments and having a hard time doing so.
Sort of a funny thing about the Oxford Webb game was, we were coming through town(Oxford) on the way to the high school for the game, and they had the Christmas Parade coming right through downtown Oxford that night prior to the football game with Dudley and Oxford Webb….It was like we were driving right through Parade route on the way to the game…..
After the Christmas Parade that night, everbody came over to the game that night for the football contest….
On the playoffs road that season, Dudley had a meeting with Northeast Guilford up at NEG, and Dudley’s QB Ricky Lewis Jr. got hurt and had to come out of the game…..Dudley did not go with their #2 man, who was a transfer from Southern Guilford…
Dudley went their #3 QB Kenny Okoro and Kenny ran them to the win….Okoro played WR/DB most of the time and he was quite the athlete, and his ability to run the ball was a major key factor in the Dudley win that night, at NEG…
(Okoro went to play college football at Wake Forest University)
