Cain and Khalfani Lead Spartans Past Montreat with Double-Doubles
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women’s basketball team dominated in a 75-46 win over Montreat to remain undefeated at home.
UNCG only trailed for two minutes and 10 seconds out of the 40 minute contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first quarter stayed very close between the Cavaliers and Spartans. However, with Montreat on top 8-7, the Spartans put up six unanswered points to take the lead (13-8) and hold it for the reminder of the game. A three-pointer from Kelly Boyle allowed the Spartans to lead by five, 20-15 at the end of the first frame.
The Spartans widened its lead in the second quarter, outscoring the Cavaliers 19-10 and posting its longest unanswered run in this quarter, 15-0. As a team, UNCG notched six three-pointers in the first half to lead 39-25 heading into the break.
UNCG outscored the Cavaliers 19-11 in the third quarter to enter the final frame on top, 58-36.
The Spartans closed out the final quarter with a 12-1 run over Montreat. The final shot by Makiah Asidanya, for her first collegiate three-pointer gave UNCG its biggest lead of the game in the final score (75-46).
BY THE NUMBERS
Khalis Cain and Ayanna Khalfani both captured double-doubles in Wednesday’s game. Cain recorded 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Khalfani posted 12 scores and 12 boards.
Khalfani’s 12 rebounds was a new career high for the graduate student.
Cain also led the squad with three blocks, while Khalfani posted five assists.
Boyle captured her first collegiate steal in the game.
Nina Horvath and Asidanya both made their first collegiate three-pointers.
The Spartans shot over 53 percent in field goals in the second half, going 15-for-28.
UNCG notched 32 points in the paint to Montreat’s 18.
The Blue & Gold recorded 39 points off the bench, while the Cavaliers only had two from theirs.
