UNCG Men’s Basketball to Take on In-State Foe Elon on Sunday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men’s basketball team completes its three-game homestand with Piedmont Triad foe Elon for a Sunday afternoon battle in the Greensboro Coliseum with a start time of 4:30 p.m.

This game will follow the UNCG women’s basketball game against the Elon women’s squad at 2:00 p.m., also at the Greensboro Coliseum. Purchasing a men’s basketball ticket gets you into the women’s game for FREE.

UNCG is on a six-game win streak which began with the program’s first ranked win against No. 14 Arkansas, 78-72 in Fayetteville and continued with the 2023 Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship title. The Spartans came back from The Bahamas and defeated William Peace, 88-56, before coming from behind for an 87-85 overtime win over Eastern Kentucky (EKU).

This will be the 44th matchup between the two teams. The Phoenix holds a 26-17 advantage over the Spartans. Last year, UNCG claimed a 65-61 victory over Elon at the Schar Center on December 3, 2022. The Spartans have won the last five matchups.

UNCG is 7-1 overall this season, while Elon is 5-4. The Spartans are currently ranked No. 4 in the latest collegeinsider.com Men’s Mid Major Top 25®.

The 7-1 record is tied for the best record in program history, as the Spartans also started 7-1 during the 2018-19 season.


UNCG came from behind on Thursday night to claim an 87-85 overtime victory over EKU at Fleming Gym.
Kobe Langley scored the game-winning basket with less than a second left on the clock.
This was the first overtime game of the Spartans season.
This was the Spartans’ sixth-straight win of the season and longest win-streak during the Mike Jones era.
This is the longest win streak since the 2020-21 season when the Spartans won seven straight games.
Four Spartans tallied double digits in the victory with Donovan Atwell leading the game with 24 points. Mikeal Brown-Jones and Kobe Langley each had 19 points, while Akrum Ahemed chipped in 10 points.


Currently, the Spartans are ranked nationally in the top 50 in six categories: 15th in three-point percentage (39.7), 17th in turnovers per game (9.4), 20th in three pointers per game (9.9), 25th in winning percentage (87.5), 42nd in assist/turnover ratio (1.48), and 45th in effective field goal percentage (0.554).
UNCG is outscoring its opponents 79.9-70.4 and is averaging 6.8 steals per game compared to its foes who are averaging 4.6 per game.
They are leading the conference in assist/turnover ratio, effective field goal percentage, three-point percentage, turnovers per game, and winning percentage.
Kobe is nationally ranked ninth in assists per game (6.8), 17th in assists (54), 20th in assist/turnover ratio (3.60), 43rd in steals per game (2.25).
Kobe leads the SoCon in assist/turnover ratio, assists, assists per game, steals, and steals per game.
Brown-Jones is nationally ranked 54th in field goal percentage (58.7).
Donovan Atwell is nationally ranked 18th in three pointers per game (3.25), 35th in total three-point field goals made (26), and 49th in three-point percentage (42.6).
Keyshaun was named SoCon Player of the Week (Nov. 20), and Brown-Jones earned the honor on November 27.
UNCG earned a preseason CollegeInsider.com ranking of 25th and is currently fourth in week four.
The Spartans were voted to finish second in the SoCon Preseason Coaches’ Poll and fourth in the Media Poll. They received one first-place vote in the Coaches’ Poll.
Keyshaun and Brown-Jones were selected to the SoCon Preseason All-SoCon team.
The Spartans return eight from last year’s roster, while adding three transfers and three freshmen.


Elon most recently fell to Radford, 82-72, on Sunday in Virginia.
Elon is outscoring opponents averaging 82.8 points per game to its opponents’ 77.8.
The Phoenix is also outrebounding its opponents, 36.7-32.7.
Nationally, the Phoenix is ranked in the top 10 in five categories: 16th in bench points per game (33.56), 34th in effective field goal percentage (0.562), 40th in scoring offense (82.8), 42nd in field goal percentage (48.5), and 49th in three-point percentage (37.6).
Elon is leading the Coastal Athletic Conference (CAA) in field goal percentage and scoring offense.
TK Simpkins is pacing the Phoenix with 13.8 points per game.
Max Mackinnon is leading the team with 5.2 rebounds per game, while Simpkins is second with 4.8 boards per game.
Mackinnon is second averaging 11.3 points per game, while Zac Ervin rounds out the double-figure Phoenix averaging 10.0 points per game.
Nationally, TK Simpkins is 26th in free throw attempts (62), which leads the conference.
The Phoenix returns eight players from last year’s roster for second-year head coach Billy Taylor.
Elon was predicted to finish 10th in the 2023-24 CAA Preseason Poll after going 6-12 in league play last season.
Reigning CAA Rookie of the Year, Mackinnon was named to the 2023-24 Preseason All-CAA second team.
