Women’s Basketball to Face UNC Asheville Before Break

GREENSBORO, NC – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women’s basketball team will head west to take on UNC Asheville on Thursday, Dec. 21 at 2 p.m. in Kimmel Arena before Christmas break.

LAST TIME OUT FOR UNCG
The Spartans took a 56-53 victory from USC Upstate on Monday, Dec. 18 in Spartanburg, S.C.
Kennedy Simpson led UNCG with 17 points after matching her career high of five three-pointers and going 6-for-10 in field goals.
Jayde Gamble and Isys Grady followed closely behind Simpson with nine points apiece.
Antoniette Emma-Nnopu led the squad with 11 boards.
Khalis Cain and Gamble tied with seven rebounds apiece.
Jay’lin Hastings posted a new game high of four points and four boards.
Grady earned a season high of four steals.
UNCG earned 20 second chance points, while USC Upstate had nine.
The Blue & Gold led the way with 29 points off the bench.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
The Spartans come into Thursday’s matchup with a 9-3 overall record.
UNCG is off to its best overall start since the 2000-01 season. That team started things off 10-3 overall.
The Spartans remain undefeated at home (7-0), for their best home start since the 2001-02 season, when UNCG also started off 7-0.
UNCG is currently in a tie for second place with ETSU in The Southern Conference (SoCon). Chattanooga remains at the top with an 11-1 non-conference record.
UNCG leads the conference in five statistical categories: assist/turnover ratio (0.98), blocks per game (4.2), steals per game (8.6), turnover margin (3.17), and turnovers forced per game (16.75).
The Spartans stand out nationally at 28th in scoring defense (53.8).
Gamble is seventh nationally with 36 steals on the season and 20th in steals per game with a 3.00 average.
Cain is 34th nationally and second in the conference with 102 rebounds this season.
Gamble and Grady lead the Spartans in scoring this season with 138 and 128 points, respectively.
The Spartans were picked to finish sixth in the 2023-24 SoCon Preseason Coaches’ Poll, trailing ETSU, Chattanooga, Mercer, Wofford and Furman and coming in front of Samford and Western Carolina.
Grady was named the 2023-24 SoCon Preseason All-Conference Team after her efforts in the 2022-23 season.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
UNC Asheville is currently on a two-game losing streak with a 4-7 overall record.
The Bulldogs are 3-1 at home after dropping their matchup to NC Central, 65-53 on Monday.
The Eagles are the only similar opponent that both the Bulldogs and Spartans have played this season.
UNC Asheville has gone up against four other SoCon teams this season in Furman, Wofford, Western Carolina and ETSU. The team was only able to claim a win over Western Carolina out of the four.
The Bulldogs lead the Big South in six statistical categories: bench points per game (27.9), field goal percentage defense (36.5), defensive rebounds per game (24.8), offensive rebounds per game (14.8), rebounds per game (39.64), scoring defense (55.4), scoring margin (3.9), three-point percentage defense (27.7), and turnover margin (2.09).
Mckinley Brooks-Sumpter is third in the conference with a 7.2 rebounds per game average this season.
Lalmani Simmons leads the Bulldogs with 134 points this season, averaging 12.2 points per game.
Jaila Lee stands out with 14 steals.
Brooks-Sumpter was named to the Big South Conference Preseason All-Conference First Team.
The Bulldogs were picked fifth in the 2023-24 Big South Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
SERIES HISTORY
The Spartans lead in the overall series against the Bulldogs at 16-3. The two teams last met at Fleming Gym in UNCG’s 2021-22 season opener when the Spartans claimed a 52-48 win over UNC Asheville. Khalis Cain led the team with six blocks and posted 12 points in the two team’s last meeting. The Spartans won the last contest in Asheville in the 2019-20 season, 67-40.
