9 thoughts on “Final Scores from Championship Friday at the HAECO Invitational Basketball Tournament where the Smith Golden Eagle Men and the Greensboro Day School Women take home the Titles”

  1. HI I disagree with BOYS MVP– it should have been Jackson Sellars- without his 27 points
game would have been a blow out for Smith– Sometimes MVP needs to come from a team
that losses in the Championship game.

  2. Congratulations to the women and men winners.
I’d like to see this tournament happen earlier for recruiting and visibility purposes. Not to mention allowing families to get holiday travel done.
College coaches not paying attention to this they busy coaching their own teams in holiday tournaments.
Is there not a Sheetz tournament Andy? Almost as good if not better?

  3. Sheetz Tournament is running next Weds. December 27-Friday 30th at Southwest Guilford High School….

  4. Wondering when the public schools are going to stand up for themselves regarding this tournament.

After the tournament seeding came out it was obvious that the format was changed to suit the one school.
For as long as I can remember the first round games featured the 1 and 8 seeds and the 4 and 5 seeds playing on the “main court” while the 2 and 7 seeds and the 3 and 6 seeds were playing on the secondary court.
This year the 1 and 8 seed and the 2 and 7 seed got the “main” court assignment while the 3 and 6 and the 4 and 5 got the secondary court.
    Why did this matter?
Well under the court assignments that had been done for years that meant that the winner of the 1/8 and 4/5 game would have already have played one game on that court so no advantage there.
Also the losers of the 1/8, 4/5 game would meet on court that neither had played on either so is fair to both participants.
This year the winners of the 4/5 and 3/6 game had to change venues so the winners of the 1/8 and 2/7 game gained the advantage of having already played a game on that court.
Is it a coincidence that for the first time in several years the 1 seed was a different team and so the format changed?
Not to mention the 2 seed on the boys side had already played a regular season game on that very same court.
Did public schools have the option to play at the Coliseum Fieldhouse prior to the HAECO?
I was at the Big Four event that was held on a Saturday at Grimsley and the Coliseum Fieldhouse would have sold out for that event as Grimsley had to turn people away at the door.
Now to the average person this would not make a difference but coaches know that this gives the team it favors a slight edge so kudos to the Page boys team for overcoming that slight disadvantage in their semi final match up.
And congrats to Coach Partee and his team for winning the championship.
The real story of the tournament should be when the school that is allowed to have players who have played five years of varsity basketball (some who have reclassed so in some cases you have players who are 19 years old playing against 14 year olds and would not be eligible per NCHSAA rules) and are allowed to have “year round” programs through AAU basketball do not win the tournament.

Not to mention the fact that private schools are allowed to practice on Sunday( public schools are not allowed to do that) and have played twice as many games as public schools prior to HAECO. ( public schools are only allowed 24 games).
Do not have a problem with the private school participating but should only be able to use players that qualify under the rules the other 7 schools have to abide by and would be interesting to know the reason why the traditional court assignments for the first round suddenly changed this year.
Another thing to consider is “The Big Four” format that was played this year in early December was quite successful in terms of money earned by each school.
As this event begins to get traction it will continue to draw well.
I am sure that a holiday tournament that included the Big Four schools would be successful as well whereas a HAECO without the Big Four may not do so well attendance wise. Could be wrong about that but would be interesting to see.
Of course the Big Four schools would have organize a venue, get dates, invite 4 other schools to participate, get sponsors, etc… so will probably never happen as that is a lot of work and the Sports Council and the Coliseum do an excellent job with the tournament and the student athletes enjoy the “big time” atmosphere the venue provides.
But it is something for the public schools to think about as there has to be many people in this area who own businesses and who attended one of the Big Four schools who could be willing to sponsor such an event.
But until the Big Four schools as well as the 3 other public schools (Bishop is private but are members of the NCHSAA so they have to abide to the same rules as public schools)that participate in this event speak up for themselves they will continue to be at a disadvantage in the HAECO under the current conditions.

  5. Smdh nobody is holding a gun to any team and forcing them to play haeco. If you don’t like the setup or the court then you can respectfully decline the invitation. Northwest and Northern did for their own reasons.
Or maybe just be quiet go play hard and compete.

Congrats to the winning teams. Why five players on the girls all tournament team vs six for the boys?

  6. Girls All-Tournament Team:
    Azahreya Drayton-Gill, Smith High School
    Emma Wagoner, Bishop McGuinness
    Kiersten Varner, Bishop McGuinness
    Samantha Collins, Greensboro Day
    Liz Wyrick, Greensboro Day
    Candace Williams, MVP, Greensboro Day
And that is six girls and six boys on the HAECO All-Tournament Team…Azahreya Drayton-Gill from Smith girls had to leave early and did not make the team photo….

    Congratulations to the 2023 Men’s #HAECOInvit All-Tournament Team too…

    Will Otto, Greensboro Day
    Tyren Martin, Page High School
    Jackson Sellars, Page High School
    Micah Cowan, Smith High School
    Gage Lattimore, Smith High School
Jaylon Bumpass, MVP, Smith High School

  7. There seemed to be great feel at the end of this year’s tournament….All who I heard from were sending out positive remarks….This was one of the Best-Ever Tournaments…The Thursday night crowd was a Sell-Out….They stopped selling tickets…The energy in the building was unreal…Teams like a challenge it means a lot to be able to beat Greensboro Day…The challenge makes it fun and does not diminish the quality of the tournament at all…GDS can reclass, but look at how many transfers we have within the public schools these days….The are tons of different things you might want to argue about, but this is a great event….One of the Top-Five Tournaments ever this year…Why change anything??? Nothings broke, this year was GREAT…Friday night, Page and Smith put on a show…People are going to remember Page knocking off GDS, and they will remember Smith getting the Title win for the first time since back when Art Wade was the head coach at Smith…..

Page-GDS boys was super, but the game that made the building jump was Dudley-Smith boys, and not because of the score…Because of the gate/attendance…You count success when you count the money going back to the schools…This Dudley-Smith game was off off the charts and biggger that any of the Big Four crowds….

The Big Four crowds were nowhere near as loud and vocal as the HAECO….The Big Four games had good crowds, but the games themselves seemed like preseason scrimmage games…There was NO buzz for the Big Four games…The Buzz for The HAECO was hard to measure…Especially on Thursday night…I was broadcasting Page-GDS boys game and it was so loud, you couldn’t hear yourself think, as the old saying goes…..

  8. Ok Andy nice just making sure girls get the same love. I think pound for pound girls in guilford during the past what 10 plus years has had more talent than the boys side.
Haeco is a good tournament kids getting to play some ball is always a good thing. only bad thing from a coaches view is you may end up playing a conference opponent four times by the time the season is over.
