**********I told Page girls assistant coach Jillian Heard before the game, that if the Pirates wanted to beat the very strong SWG Cowgirls team, then Page would have to play the toughest defense of their lives, and that is pretty much what the Page girls proceeded to do…Page was rolling with just eight available players, but everyone of the Pirates that took to the court in the Mac Morris Gym, gave their heart and soul to get this victory….

Page had nada, zilch, NO conference victories coming into this contest, and the SWG Cowgirls defeated Page 55-31, back on December 12, in High Point…I was at that game, and like I told little Lola Vanore, after the game tonight, she was not the same offensive player tonight, she was back in December…It was the Vanore story in the third quarter tonight, when Lola ripped off three 3s….And those were deep 3s too…

Lola is starting to develop her offensive approach, and it is a good one, with her dribble work to set up the offense, her penetration to the basket, and her distribution of the ball to her teammates…I would like to see her get to the free throw line more often, and see her take advantage of those free shots…With her stroke, she can knock them down, so why not go get some…

When Lola left the game, late in the fourth quarter after fouling out, Assyria Hooper and Hattie Sloyan did a very good job of keeping the offense flowing, and the ball moving out front….Page had to spend possession time, killing the clock, and we saw Assyria and Hattie getting the time to come off the clock, and still maintain the lead and the ball….

Hooper has very good speed dribble skills and she gets to the basket, with a deliberate, attacking motion…Hooper can go fast and strong to the rack/bucket/basket….I saw several qualities in Hooper, when I was watching her play vs. SWG back in December…You could tell right then and there, that Hooper had that nature about her, that allows her to move fast and furious and still be under control, and it lets her get up to the basket on those key dribble drives, that give her green-light clearance to approach the rim, with the basketball…

Hattie was making a few more of her circus shots on Friday, and Page neeeded every one of those Hattie Sloyan shots to go down….Four points first half for Hattie, and then six points in the crucial second half for the Page Pirates senior….As we look at my game sheet, the Page Pirates again dressed just eight(8) players for this game, and only six(6) Pirates saw action…Zamaria Booker gave the Pirates some very precious minutes off of that Page bench…Booker was a factor for the Pirates in this victory…

Sutton Sherrill was a force for Page on the boards and she played some very important help defense for the Pirates, and the same can be said for Hailee Cook…Sometimes Hailee will just happen to be in the right spot and she will grab a key rebound, and then other times you need her for the outlet pass, or you need her to be to accept a pass that will get you out of trouble…Emma Pyrtle did not dress tonight for the Pirates, but she always has that big smile on her face, and she did super job, when she sang the National Anthem before the girls game…

Things were just right, and they were clicking for Page on this night….Former Pirate Kennedy Leggett, now a SWG Cowgirl, finsished with 8 points for C’girls with all 8 of her points coming from the free throw line, where she went 8-8….Kennedy did make a field goal, and she is usually good for about three 3s in the game, at least three 3’s, but tonight, the Page Pirates’ Defense made a difference….

The Pirates stayed on the Ship, and they stayed on the course to victory…Page beat SWG, and they can defeat Ragsdale, SEG, Western, and Grimsley, but it will still be a huge hill/mountain to climb to get by Northern Guilford, and Northwest Guilford is a whole new animal, now that they Maslyn Mosbacher back in their Viking backcourt…We have to see which way the ball rolls for the rest of this season, but Page has now proven that can win in this conference, and proved tonight, that can knock one of the conference’ top team, in the Southwest Guilford Cowgirls….

The Page boys lost to the SWG Cowboys by 13 points, 82-69, back on December 12 at “The Ranch”, in High Point….In that first encounter with the Pirates and the Cowboys, Page got out-scored 25-14 in the fourth quarter, but tonight, at The Mac/Mac Morris Gym, Page had an eight-point lead going into the fourth quarter, and the Pirates found a way to FINISH…That was a real key, Page took that eight-point advantage and they hit the Increase Button…

Page was able to out-score SWG, 24-17 in the fourth period, so Page took that smooth 8-point cushion, and made it a 15-point game-winning margin, with the 74-59 final score…In the game at Southwest Guilford, back in December, Jackson Sellars took over the game for the Pirates, scoring a game-leading 33 points…

In that game at SWG, sometimes the Page Pirates would find themselves standing around and watching Sellars go-to-work, and the other Pirates were not adding in their Pirates parts to the Puzzle…Tonight, it was junior Tyren Martin, who was down with 9 points in the first half of play, and then Martin was starting to do the partin’ of the Red Sea in the second half, as he threw down, 19 big markers/points…

Martin was chartin’ his efforts and he told us after the game, that he was feeling it, and it was almost like he had seen this entire situation and scenario before, as the Page Pirates were preparing for the SWG Cowboys in the Page Pirates practices…Martin had the green light tonight, and he was seeing almost nothing but bright orange…Orange as in the front of the rim, as his shots were going in, and orange as in the color of the old pumpkin/basketball….Martin was not just making one certain shot, he was taking and making a variety of shots on the night…

This was like one of those nights at The Mac, that we have seen over the years…Everything was falling into place at the House that Mac, Danny Manning, John Newman, Michael Foster, Haywood Jeffires, James Summers and many others built over the years…

This was the night where Tyren Martin was playing like Cody and Caleb Martin, and not like Warren Martin….Anybody out there remember Warren Martin??? He was from Virginia, and played at UNC-Chapel Hill…Andrew Bartlett was playing defense on his back on this night….He kept on laying flat on his back on The Mac floor, after he was drawing the successful charging fouls, as Bartlett lead a “Defense Wins Ball Games” campaign for his home team Pirates…

Alex Jones bought into the Bartlett Battles and Alex, developed that “Me Too” defensive mentality, and he found his way to the floor a few times, in the charge-drawing defensive position….Jones the third-leading scorer for the Page Pirates after the game-leading 28 points from Martin, and the 13 points from Jackson Sellars…Alex Jones with 11 points, and numerous rebounds for Page, and when Jones wasn’t rebounding, his work blocking out, and keeping the SWG Cowboys off of the boards was outstanding…

Sellars scoring started slowly, and the Page senior only had four points in the first half…For the longest stretch of time, Sellars had no points in the game, but Page was finding ways to get by without everything that Sellars has to offer, and Page still lead by 8 points, while they were waiting for Sellars to get rolling…

Page got plenty of support from guys like Ian Robb, Christopher Stewart, Luke Webb, and Jayden Lee…Robb shooting, Stewart and Lee with ball handling, and Webb on defense with his ‘Spider Webb-like’ abilities…You add in the work turned in by Jorrell Wilson and Page had nine men contributing to the Winning Effort….So Page had the overall Team Effort, and now what the Pirates have to do, is take this effort to the next game, and the game after that, and then the game after that….

For Southwest Guilford, the freshman, Brayden Gatling, led the C’boys with 15 points…Gatling and Myles Graves, another freshman appear to be a big part of the SWG future for boys basketball…Seniors like Corbin Wilson will be stepping aside, but those freshmen from The Ranch, will have to be ready to carry out the future plans for Coach Greg Vlazny, and his Cowboy Corp….
