It was one of those hot games in the old town tonight..You know one of the games that they might call, “The Game of the Week, The Game of the Month, and the Game of the Year” all rolled into one game, and it was…

Final from the Chester Bradley Gym on the James B. Dudley High School campus:
(And this game is playing back now for you on GreensboroSports Radio…Go there to hear the games now…That’s on GreensboroSports Radio….
Smith boys 83, Dudley 75 in Triple Overtime
Smith(17-3/8-2)…Dudley(12-7/8-2)
Halftime Score was Smith 35, Dudley 33…End of Third Quarter:Smith 49, Dudley 48…End of Regulation:Dudley 62, Smith 62…End of First Overtime:Smith 66, Dudley 66…End of Second Overtime:Dudley 70, Smith 70….Final Score:Smith 83, Dudley 75….

High scorer and Player of the Game for Smith was Jaylon Bumpass with 29 points…Player of the Game and high scorer for Dudley was Jerron Blackwell with 29 points….

Smith scoring:Bumpass 29 points, Lattimore 14, Palmore 12, Miller Jr. 10, Cowan 7, Mann 4, Johnson 3, Leak 2…
Dudley scoring:Blackwell 29 points, CJ Neely 16, CJ Jones 12, Ismael Mande 11, Andrew Rogers 4, Nasir Newkirk 3…

We will give you more details on this game as the night settles down some, but this was one of the wildest games I have ever seen/ witnessed…The Chester Bradley Gym there at Dudley HS was packed out, and the game sold out back on Thursday at 2pm…

The wild shot of the game came right at the end of regulation, with the scored tied at 62-all, and Smith has the ball, and as the time is running out, Kenny Miller Jr. from Smith puts up a long three-point shot from near the right sideline, and just in front of the Smith Golden Eagles bench, and Miller Jr. drains it…He killed it, but the clock was running out, the officials said the ball did not leave Miller Jr.’s hand before the horn sounded…

The officials did confer for quite a while before they waved the shot off and said it was no good…During the time the referees were talking the scoreboard continued to read, 62-62…And that is how we arrived at Overtime #1…The officials said NO GOOD, but several hand-held video cameras from around the arena on repaly showed the shot going thorough the net before time expired….Made for some good drama there at Dudley on Friday night….

Both teams regrouped and we had ourselves a bountiful series of Overtime Basketball…Four points from each team was the max in the first two extended sessions, and then Smith out-scored Dudley, 13-5, in the final stanza of OT…Jaylone Bumpass hit key free throws for Smith when it mattered most, and he also added some big 2s to his stat sheet, which showed 29 points for him on the night…Smith also got big buckets from Gavin Palmore, Micah Cowan, and Kendrick Johnson hit two clutch free throws to help Smith get over the hump…

Dudley got an offensive assortment of scoring from Jerron Blackwell…CJ Jones attacked the basket with a vengence for Dudley and the Panthers got strong support from CJ Neely, Ishmael Mande, Nasir Newkirk, and Andrew Rogers…Blackwell is looking at Louisville for football and maybe Louisville should start looking at Blackwell for basketball too….

This was a one-of-a-kind high school basketball game, and this has to be one of the very best high school basketball rivalries in the state of North Carolina….Dudley over Smith at Smith, 53-48 in Overtime, and now Smith over Dudley at Dudley, 83-75 in Triple Overtime….Will try and add more to this one later on, but still processing this one, and trying to settle back down after reaching that emotional high that these games can send you into….We also remember that Smith beat Dudley back in December, in the semifinals of the HAECO Invitational Basketball tournament, in an non-conference matchup…

Also from the Chester Bradley Gymnasium on Friday night:
Smith girls 75, Dudley 37
Smith(17-2/10-0)…Dudley(12-7/8-2)
End of First Quarter:Smith 20, Dudley 5…Halftime:Smith 44, Dudley 15…End of Third Quarter:Smith 57, Dudley 27…Final:Smith 75, Dudley 37…
Smith scoring:Azhareyea Drayton-Gill 15 points, Morgan Smith 10, Rogers 9, Williams 8, Deberry 7, Rutledge 6, Daye 6, Woods 6, Morales 4, Haith 2…Ten players scored for the Smith Golden Eagles…
Dudley scoring:Jewel Pass 9 points, Janiah Terry 9 points, Moses 7, Vonreichbauer 5, Cooper 4, Taylor 2

For the Smith girls, Morgan Smith and Azahreya Drayton-Gill are just such very tough guards, how do you fight through that???

Smith has a Triple-Headed monster in the post in Amani Williams, Aloni Rutledge, and Justice Ezekiel….Smith with solid guard balance coming from Shamara Rogers and little London Haith, and the depth of Smith will get a strangle-hold on you as the Golden Eagles used 13 players vs. Dudley, and at least 11 of the 13 got involved with points productivity…

The Smith girls are strong, fast, and deep…Trying to survive that Smith attacking defense is like trying to get through a wildfire with a water pistol…It nearly can’t be done…Only losses on Smith’s record last season were to the 2-A, 3-A, and 4-A Champs, and Smith has come around to the point now, where the Golden Eagles seemed primed to surpass their 2022-2023 numbers…Here in 2023-2024, the Smith Golden Eagles are looking for, and expecting more, and their team leader, Mike Bolton, is challenging his ladies every day to exceed what they were able to do in the past…Get better every day, and all things will come to pass…

And did we mention, the Smith girls pass the ball pretty well too…But many times they are getting to the basket so strong with the dribble drive, that it makes sense for Smith to just get the ball to the rim, as quickly as possible, and if there is a miss, count on Williams, Rutledge, or Ezekiel to get the rebound and then finish things off with a put-back off the glass, then into the cylinder, and down through the hole/basket…

Hard-love and hard-coaching from Coach Bolton, but it is currently paying dividends for the Smith Golden Eagles girls basketball program….

The Dudley girls are growing, but the process will not be a quick one…It will take time and patience and when you look at the top girls team in the Mid-State 3-A Conference right now, and that would be the Smith Golden Eagles, and then you look at the #2 team in the conference, and that would be the Dudley Panthers, there is a gap there and the gap is large, but Dudley must continue to work with young players like Moses and the lot, and continue to work to bridge that gap….

Do not think Kimora Haith scored at all last night for Dudley, and she is one of those Dudley bulldogs that has to score, in order for the Dudley Panthers to be successful….They need her and Heaven Cooper must get her follow shots going in the post…Rebounds working well for Cooper, but she must make sure that the put-back attempts are going in/down….

Also we do like the back-up post player Jackson for Dudley, as she has very fluid motion and movement on the court for Dudley, and Jackson can be an asset for the Panthers…

Nadia Vonreichbauer loves that three-point shot, but she has to get to basket too, with some drives and two-point takes…Have not seen Vonreichbauer getting to the free throw line very often, and to get there she must get fouled, and that comes from getting into the lane, and drawing the contact…She shoots good from the outside, but she needs to crack the inside part of the game, to make her game complete, and now one more reminder, to all of our players on every team in Guilford County, both boys and girls…Get to the Free Throw Line

These shots are free, nobody is covering you, there is no defense on you, and it is like Christmas Morning coming your way, over and over and over again…All of those FREE gifts piled up in front of you, ready for the taking….Remember these shots are FREE, and you must cash in on these savings

I was at the outdoor court last Sunday night, and as it was getting dark around 6pm, I was able to go 20-25 on my finishing free throws…And if I can do that, any kid in town can surely go 8-10 on a nice well-lighted indoor court…And I was going to stop on my final round of shots when I got to 20, but I felt like I could improve my percentage/% if I closed with 25 shots, there on the Forest Valley Outdoor Basketball Court…All I can say, in closing today is, PLAY ON, and please focus on your Free Throws and hit your Free throws, and as former coach Jerrod Harris always tells his son Seth Harris, “Bend Your Knees”, during the Free Throw process……Lots of things to remember and to keep in mind, but the most important thing to remember, is to PLAY ON…..

FCDS made FTs down the stretch and were led by 6’10” Bobby Cannon and excellent guard play. A very well coached and well played game from two good teams.**********from Game Reports reporters….
