Eastern Guilford rolls to first dual-team wrestling state title, beats Union Pines
Eastern Guilford won a state title on its first appearance in a dual-team state championship, while Union Pines finished runner-up for the third straight season.
For the first time in school history, Eastern Guilford has won a N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team wrestling state championship.
The Wildcats defeated Union Pines 36-21 in the 3A dual-team championship on Saturday at the Greensboro Coliseum Fieldhouse.
Eastern Guilford set the tone from the start as Christopher Riley recorded a fall against Chayden Hardy at the 2:16 mark. The Wildcats went on to win the first five bouts, taking a 21-0 lead over Union Pines.
Omari Figueroa also recorded a pin for Eastern Guilford, taking down Joseph Lloyd at the 3:15 mark of the 126-pound bout.
Union Pines’ Logan Mitchell won the 132-pound weight class with a 6-4 sudden victory win over Jayden Reza, but Eastern Guilford responded with a 10-6 decision by Troy Gryder in the 138-pound weight class. That win gave Union Pines a 24-3 lead with just five bouts left.
Nathaniel Mitchell followed with a win over Finnius McCafferty just 18 seconds into the 144-pound bout thanks to an injury, putting the championship out of reach for Union Pines.
Saturday’s state championship for Eastern Guilford was the first time the school has appeared in a NCHSAA dual-team wrestling state championship.
Union Pines has wrestled in the last three dual-team state championships, finishing as the runner-up in each. In 2022 and 2023, the Vikings lost to Fred T. Foard in the championship.
