HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — One student is dead and three other students are injured in what authorities are calling “a very serious” accident Friday night in southern Huntersville.
According to Medic, the incident occurred just after 9:45 p.m. at the intersection of Hambright Road and Everett Keith Road. This is near the Frankie’s Charlotte entertainment center.
Officers said all four juveniles were trapped in an overturned vehicle. Once the students were freed, first responders tried to save one of the students who was unconscious and unresponsive. However, life-saving measures were unsuccessful and the teen passed away at the scene of the crash.
The three remaining juveniles had life-threatening injuries; two were sent to Atrium Health CMC and one to Novant Health Presbyterian.
According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Mallard Creek student Caleb Kibula was the one killed in the crash. The other three in the car were also students at Mallard Creek.
Kibula was part of the class of 2025 and played on the offensive line for the football team.

In a statement to Mallard Creek families, CMS said, “Death can be difficult for us to understand, especially when it is sudden. We may feel a variety of emotions: shock, sadness, or confusion. What is most important is that we care for and support each other. The Crisis Response Team at Mallard Creek will be available this week to respond to the emotional needs of all students and available to assist with counseling. Counselors will be highly visible throughout the building and available to assist with grief counseling for students and staff.”
Authorities said the cause of the wreck is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Sergeant Nick Bruining at 704-464-5400 or at nbruining@huntersville.org.
