Southern Guilford boys 62, Dudley 56
SG(22-1/13-0)/Dudley(14-9/10-3)
End of First Quarter:SG 12, Dudley 9…Halftime:SG 23, Dudley 21…End of Third Quarter:SG 43, Dudley 41…Final:SG 62, Dudley 56
SG Scoring:Jacquarie Love 21 points, Jy Dawkins 19 points, Jamias Ferere 13 points, Tobias Hill 4, Franklin Brown 3, Zy McGee 2…
Dudley Scoring:CJ Jones 18 points, Jerron Blackwell 15 points, Kameron McNeil 7, CJ Neely 6, Nasir Newkirk 4, Ishmael Mande 3, Andrew Rogers 1…
(The J3 from SG combined for 53 of the Southern Guilford 62-point total…Ferere, Dawkins, and Love fit like a nice glove on Tuesday night at Southern Guilford High School.)
Saw former SG football wide receiver and N.C. A&T star wideout, Mr. Ron Hunt at the Southern Guilford-Dudley game tonight…Good Ron again…Knew him well in his SG days, and followed his career on over to A&T…Has done well for himself over the years…Also saw former Southwest Guilford basketball star player Amilla Huggins at the Jackson-WG Middle Basketball games yesterday…Milla Huggins is the assistant girls coach for the Jackson Middle School Trojans…

SG boys in a hard-fought win over the Dudley Panthers on Tuesday night….The first made shot of the game was a made three-pointer by Southern’s Jyi Dawkins and then Dudley’s CJ Jones came right back and nailed a three-point shot for the Panthers and we were tied at 3-3…And it was that kind of night until the final buzzer…

Jyi Dawkins, part of the J3 SG, hit that first shot of the game, and he hit the last shot of the game…On the last shot he grabbed the missed free throw by Jacqarie Love and his finish made the final score 62-56, SG…It was a four-point game going to that last second put-back by Dawkins…

Dawkins, Love, and Ferere were everywhere again tonight for Southern…Their J3 SG group has been able to help Southern Guilford win every game this season, with the exception of the Caldwell Academy contest…J3 SG and the Storm lost to Caldwell by three, and Caldwell has their own J3, in J3 Swindell…

In our game on Tuesday night, at SG, the Dudley Panthers got a very solid performance out of their guard CJ Jones…Jones hit for 18 points for Dudley, and he connected on three straight three-point shots in the early stages of the Third Quarter to lift the Dudley Panthers on top of the SG Storm…It was like Jones couldn’t miss from long range….And he was making some shots falling down…Jones with four 3s in the ball game, but he missed a couple of key free throws the stretch that could have cut the late SG lead to just two points, with enough time left on the clock for anything to happen…

Had CJ Jones 6-9 at the foul line for the night…CJ Neely did not score at all for Dudley until the fourth quarter, and Coach Wil Perry said he feels like his man, Franklin Brown, might just be the best overall defender in the Mid-State 3-A Conference…Brown went down with a slight injury in the second half, but was back in the lineup quickly, and Southern Guilford finds Brown ready to take it all down, when it comes to carrying out his defensive assignments…

Jamias Ferere, sort of like Dudley’s Neely, came out slow offensively, but he was being all covered up by the defensive work being turned in by Dudley’s Nasir Newkirk…Newkirk, a very dependable and aggressive defender…Ferere only had five points in the first half for SG, but he tallied eight second-half points…But it isn’t about points only, Ferere was also hitting the defensive boards extremely hard and he dishing off some of the prettiest assists you have ever seen, to Love and Dawkins…Ferere making that pair almost look extraordinaire….

Ferere grabbed consecutive rebounds on the defensive end, and his J3 SG teammates, both Dawkins and Love, were going for every loose ball in creation during this ballgame…Jamias, Jy, and Jacqarie are never sorry for how hard they play…They just want the chance to play even better this Friday vs. High Point Central…As a collective group, the J3 SG fellas felt like they did not play their best basketball vs. Dudley on this Tuesday…

The dream for J3 SG is to go get that 3-A State Title, and that goal is within reach, as we are now in the midst of the last week of the 2023-2024 regualr season….Three young men on a mission, that mission must go through the Southern Guilford High School Gym at least 3-4 more times, as Southern Guilford has their sights set on the crown, and all of the prestige and grandeur that goes with it….

We might see the game we saw tonight again in the Mid-State 3-A Conference Tournament…SG looking to go at #1 Seed, and Dudley should be there at #2 or #3…Good chance of Dudley vs. Smith in the semifinals, and then the Winner of that game to meet Southen Guilford, in the Finals….

We had another one of those great Guilford County matchups again tonight at SG, and the best thing about these games is that there are MORE on the way…Stay tuned here for the next Roundup, in the Mid-State 3-A Conference…It was a SOLD OUT SG Gym for this game, and there should be at least two of these type games left for the Roundup….

Dudley girls 43, Southern Guilford 28
Dudley(16-7/11-2)/SG(6-17/4-9)
End of First Quarter:Dudley 11, SG 5…Halftime:Dudley 21, SG 13…End of Third Quarter:Dudley 41, SG 18…Final:Dudley 43, SG 28…
Dudley Scoring:Adriana Moses 13 points, Jewel Pass 8, Janiah Terry 7, Raelyn Baker 6, Nadia Vonreichbauer 4, Jalyn Taylor 3, Kami Jackson 2…
SG Scoring:Courtney Griffith 14 points, Saniyah Parker 6, Charlee Slaughter 3, Ariana Hernandez 3, Jamiya Covington 2…

Dudley just too strong at the guard position for Southern to have a chance to crack the Panthers’ Code..SG was playing a very tough 3-2 zone defense, and Dudley was having trouble breaking that zone down…Fairly tight game in the first half, and SG’s Courteny Griffith was able to keep her club in the game, with her 8 first half points…

Often times Dudley was running a 1-4 offense, with four guards and a post player…Dudley went with Kami Jackson in the post to start the contest, and she got help from Ivey Vinson in the paint…Dudley also ran quick guards at SG, and that got the best of the Storm…Adriana Moses, Jewel Pass, Janiah Terry, Jalyn Taylor, and Raelyn Baker gave the Panthers plenty of guards to choose from and senior Nadia Vonreichbauer gave Dudley another passer/ball handler, and she also could man the post, and play basket/rim protector, back along the baseline on defense….

Moses led the Dudley Panthers in scoring with her 15-point night, and Jewel Pass added 8 points for the Panthers…Dudley basically got two points out of Jackson from the post, and Dudley’s other 41 points were coming from the bevy of Panther guards…

In this game center Heaven Cooper did not play, and guard Kimora Haith did not play, and those two not seeing action, looks to be a coach’s decision move made by Panthers coach Frank McNeil….For Southern, Courtney Griffith was the glue that held SG together, but we must add in here, that Charlee Slaughter is showing major improvement for the SG Storm…Southern’s oveall ball-handling still leaves a lot to be desired, but it is getting steadily better…

But, you have to be aware that Dudley’s fast paced defense can take you out of your game, and you are lucky if get your game back before the final buzzer…Dudley is a very athletic group, and their overall team speed and quickness exceeds their team strength, as in muscle mass and power strength and power skills…Dudley likes to out-run and out-last you, as they are able to dictate the flow of these games…

Dudley should get Cooper back soon, and Dudley will have to be able to use Copper and Jackson in some sort of effective way for the Conference Tournament and the Playoffs…..Dudley and Southern both still looking to develop their future stars, and the Stars of Today, might be right there with on the court, here in 2024…Is it going to Moses??? Is it going to be Pass, Baker, Taylor, or Terry…Only time will tell, and our time is just about done for today/tonight…Back at on the basketball trail, again somewhere later today……Finally for Southern Guilford, Chasidi Westmoreland, Danielle Walker, Saniyah Parker, Ariana Hernandez, and Janiya Covington all are working hard to get better for the Storm…

  1. Kendre Harrison brings back memories of Christian Hampton breaking the glass backboard at Grimsley HS, a few years back…Anybody else remember that Friday night…We had to finish the game on a Saturday afternoon, with NWG vs. Grimsley at Dudley HS…Then Grimsley played their next game the following Tuesday at UNCG…

Guess should start calling Jy Dawkins, from Southern Guilford, The Nail Man…Not the Mailman like Karl Malone, but the Nail Man for Dawkins, as he put the nail in the coffin, on his put-back shot last night vs. the Dudley Panthers…
