UNCG Softball Hosts Winthrop on Wednesday for Home Opening Doubleheader
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team returns to Greensboro for its home opener, hosting Winthrop on Wednesday, February 14 for a doubleheader with the first game slated for 3:00 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
All regular season softball home games are free admission. Concessions will not be open and outside food is permitted. Concessions will open March 3 and outside food will not be permitted when concessions open. All weekday home games (not including Friday) will be Bark in the Park games, where spectators can bring their dogs.

RUNDOWN ON THE SPARTANS
UNCG was chosen to finish first in The Southern Conference (SoCon) Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Spartans received four first-place votes.
Senior Brooklynn Maxwell, redshirt-junior Maddie Spell, and junior Jorde Chartrand were named to the SoCon Preseason first team.
Junior Grace Loftin and sophomore Rhyann Jones were named to the SoCon Preseason second team.
UNCG won its sixth-straight SoCon Regular Season title in 2023.
The Spartans won their third SoCon Tournament Championship in route to the program’s seventh NCAA Tournament bid.
This was their third ticket to the NCAA Tournament in six years.
Maycin Brown and Blayke Batten return for their fifth year in the Blue & Gold.
UNCG added five freshmen and one transfer to the 2024 roster.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
UNCG went 1-4 at the Carolina Classic, hosted by South Carolina, to begin the 2024 slate.
The Spartans defeated Jacksonville State on Saturday, 5-4.
During the opening weekend Tori Dalehite went 4-for-8 with two runs scored averaging .500 at the plate.
Maxwell was second on the team with a .438 batting average, going 7-for-16 at the plate with five runs scored, one double, one triple, one home run and three RBI.
The Spartans hit five home runs last weekend, with Loftin leading the way with two.
She also led the way with five RBI.
Spell had the lone win in the circle for the Spartans.
RUNDOWN ON THE WINTHROP EAGLES
Winthrop concluded 2023, 26-24 overall and 8-13 in the Big South.
Winthrop was voted tied for fourth in the Big South Preseason Coaches Poll.
Pitcher Reese Basinger was named to the Preseason All-Conference team.
The Eagles hosted North Carolina A&T and North Carolina during the opening weekend, and are 2-2 heading to Greensboro.
Winthrop defeated the Aggies with scores of 7-2 and 2-1.
Paige Rivas leads the Eagles with a .500 batting average, swinging 7-for-14. She has scored five runs, tallied one double and one triple, and is 4-for-4 in stolen bases.
Ashton Vanhouse is leading the team with two RBI this season. She is one of three Eagles with a .333 batting average.
In the circle, Basinger has tossed 12.2 innings for a 0.55 ERA and a 1-1 record with 14 strikeouts.

UNCG hosts Drexel, Sacred Heart, and Ohio this weekend from Friday, February 16 to Sunday, February 18 for the Spiro Classic at the UNCG Softball Stadium. The Spartans will face Sacred Heart first on Friday at 12:30 p.m.
