UNCG Men’s Basketball Takes Down Terriers in Spartanburg, 58-47
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men’s basketball team swept the regular season series against Wofford behind a 58-47 victory over the Terriers on Saturday night at the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
Two Spartans tallied double figures, including Donovan Atwell who paced the game with 15 points and Keyshaun Langley(Southwest Guilford HS) who registered 13 points.
Kobe Langley(Southwest Guilford HS) reached the 200 career steals milestone with his six this game, bringing his total to 205. He is fourth in the UNCG record book, sitting behind Isaiah Miller (315), Ricky Hickman (236), and Courtney Eldridge (226). Keyshaun is now fifth all time with his 201 career steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Spartans offense started out on top with an 8-0 run in the first three minutes of play. Wofford bounced back with 10-straight points to earn its first lead, 10-8, but UNCG had a 7-2 run, regaining the advantage, 15-12, and never trailing in the game again. UNCG saw its first opportunity with a double-digit lead at 2:45 in the first half on Atwell’s third three pointer of the game, 32-22. The Spartans went into the locker room with a 12-point advantage, 38-26, bringing their total to 12 games this season with a double-figure lead at the half.
The two teams traded baskets during the first couple of minutes of action. Following a 9-2 run ending with 6:44 on the clock, the Spartans saw their largest lead of the game, 54-36, climbing to an 18-point advantage. Wofford’s 11-4 run in the remaining minutes wasn’t enough, as UNCG walked away with a 58-47 victory.
BY THE NUMBERS
Keyshaun’s seven assists is a season high.
Mikeal Brown-Jones chipped in nine points and seven rebounds.
Kobe’s six steals was a game high and matched his career high.
He also recorded seven points and five assists.
Joryam Saizonou matched his career-best of two steals.
Jalen Breath led the team with nine rebounds and nine points.
UNCG outmatched Wofford in points off turnovers, 20-7, fast break points, 10-3, and points in the paint, 24-18.

UP NEXT
The Spartans split their time at home and on the road next week. First UNCG will host Western Carolina on Wednesday, February 21 at the Greensboro Coliseum with a start time of 6:00 p.m. This game will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.
UNCG then travels to Macon, Georgia to rematch Mercer on Saturday, February 24 for a 4:30 p.m. start time at Hawkins Arena.

Coach Patterson Earns 300th Career Win in Victory Over Mercer
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Head Coach Trina Patterson earned her 300th career win on Saturday afternoon as the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women’s basketball team claimed a dominating 69-49 victory over Mercer.
Jayde Gamble led both teams with 22 points. Ayanna Khalfani recorded her seventh double-double this season after registering 17 points and 10 boards. Khalfani was only four assists shy of a triple-double after leading the team with six dimes.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A layup from Khalfani at 9:44 led the Spartans to start off the contest with a 9-0 run to never allow Mercer to lead in the game. With 2:44 left in the first quarter, Gamble recorded a jumper, giving the Spartans the 19-6 lead over the Bears. Mercer was able to cut the deficit back to six after going on a 7-0 scoring run to close out the first frame, 19-13.
After Mercer’s Ashlee Locke recorded a second chance layup to start off the second quarter, UNCG chipped in for a 16-1 run, holding the Bears to only three points in the frame. Both teams headed to the locker room with UNCG holding a 35-16 lead over Mercer.
The Bears came out of the break to record a 4-0 run, which the Spartans quickly responded to by dropping six unanswered points of their own (41-20). UNCG was able to outscore Mercer in the third quarter, 24-16 to head into the final frame on top, 59-32.
The fourth quarter was the only one in which the Bears were able to outscore the Spartans (17-10). However, with the margin already in favor of UNCG, the squad would be able to walk away unfazed, coming away with the 20-point win, 69-49.
BY THE NUMBERS
Kelly Boyle recorded a career high of two steals.
Jay’lin Hastings followed closely behind Khalfani with 10 rebounds.
Khalfani also led the Spartans with three blocks.
UNCG had 38 points in the paint to Mercer’s 24.
The Spartans had 11 points off of turnovers to the Bears’ eight.

Baseball Earns 8-7 Victory Over Fairfield in Game Two
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team earned an 8-7 victory over Fairfield after posting five runs in the second inning on Saturday afternoon at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fairfield’s catcher Ethan Hubbard grounded out to the Spartans’ Aidan Brewer at shortstop giving Paul Catalano time to run home for the first tally of the game, 1-0.
In the bottom half of the first inning, the Spartans got busy on offense. With Zachary Walsh on second base, Caleb Cozart stepped up to plate and crushed an 0-1 count over the right center wall for his second home run of the season giving UNCG the advantage (2-1). With runners on first and third, Brewer grounded out to the pitcher, scoring Matt Venuto from third base (3-1).
Sammy Tortorella continued working on the mound for the Spartans in the second inning, leaving the Stags scoreless with two runners left on base.
In UNCG’s half of the second inning, the squad recorded five runs. With Brantley Truitt on second base and Jeremy Wolf on third, Cozart doubled out to left field to give the Spartans two runs (5-1). The third run of the inning for the Spartans came from a fielding error off the Stags’ shortstop, sending Jake Ogden to first base and scoring Cozart (6-1). UNCG scored again in the inning off a single through the left side of the field from Brewer to score Venuto. The final score of the inning and final run of the day for the Spartans came off a hit by pitch with bases loaded, sending Wolf to first base and scoring Ogden for UNCG to take an 8-1 lead over the Stags heading to the third inning.
Fairfield was able to chip away in each inning earning one run in the third, fifth, seventh, eighth and two runs in the sixth coming back within one heading to the ninth inning (8-7). Grant Aycock led the Spartans on the mound in the final 2.2 innings, only giving up one run for UNCG to claim the 8-7 win over Fairfield.
NOTES:
Tortorella, Dear and Aycock earned a combined total of 11 strikeouts in the game on the mound.
Cozart led the Spartans with four RBI, earning a .429 batting average on the day.
Cozart and Venuto led UNCG with two runs apiece.
UNCG recorded 27 putouts to Fairfield’s 24.
