Chartrand Hits Two Homers, UNCG Softball Falls to North Carolina, 6-4
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Junior Jorde Chartrand of the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team crushed two home runs as the Spartans fell to in-state ACC foe North Carolina, 6-4, on Wednesday evening at Anderson Softball Field.
Both teams went down three-straight batters in the first inning and Chartrand put the Spartans 1-0 in the top of the second with a solo home run to right field.
The Tar Heels took a 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the frame off a bases-loaded walk and a single to third base.
North Carolina extended its lead to four, 5-1, in the bottom of the third. With two outs and a runner on first, Kate Bubela doubled to left field to put runners in scoring position. Lexi Godwin came up to bat and sent a long ball over the left field wall for a one-out three-run home run.
The Tar Heels added another run in the bottom of the sixth, 6-1. North Carolina loaded the bases twice during the game, once in the bottom of the fourth and again in the bottom of the sixth. UNCG’s defense and pitching held its ground stranding all three runners in both cases.
The Spartans fought back in the top of the seventh, as Chartrand crushed her second homer of the game to center field to lead off the frame, 6-2. With two outs and runners on second and third, Grace Loftin doubled to center field to cut the deficit to two, 6-4. Following a pitching change, North Carolina retired the side with a strikeout to secure the win 6-4.
Notes
This was Chartrand’s third-career multi-home run game. She hit two blasts last season against Radford on April 12 and two against Mercer on April 28.
Chartrand was the only Spartan with multiple hits in the game, swinging 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.
Brooklynn Maxwell, Jessie Shipley, Loftin, Maycin Brown, and Blayke Batten each had one hit.
Loftin tallied the Spartans other two RBI with her second double of the season.
