UNCG Softball Travels to Charlotte for Midweek Game, Competes Against Elon in Three-Game Weekend Series

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team continues its nine-game road trip with an in-state battle against Charlotte for a mid-week game on Wednesday, February 28 at 4:00 p.m. at the Sue M. Daughtridge Stadium.

The Spartans will follow the single game against the 49ers with a three-game weekend series against another in-state foe, Elon. Friday and Saturday’s games will be played at Hunt Softball Park and Sunday’s game will be played at the UNCG Softball Stadium.

The Spartans are currently 8-10 overall. The 49ers are 8-6 overall and the Phoenix is 5-10 overall.

All regular season softball home games at the UNCG Softball Stadium are free admission. Concessions will not be open and outside food is permitted. Concessions will open March 3 and outside food will not be permitted when concessions open. All weekday home games (not including Friday) will be Bark in the Park games, where spectators can bring their dogs.

RUNDOWN ON THE SPARTANS

UNCG was chosen to finish first in The Southern Conference (SoCon) Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Spartans received four first-place votes.
Senior Brooklynn Maxwell, redshirt-junior Maddie Spell, and junior Jorde Chartrand were named to the SoCon Preseason first team.
Junior Grace Loftin and sophomore Rhyann Jones were named to the SoCon Preseason second team.
UNCG won its sixth-straight SoCon Regular Season title in 2023.
The Spartans won their third SoCon Tournament Championship in route to the program’s seventh NCAA Tournament bid.
This was their third ticket to the NCAA Tournament in six years.
Maycin Brown and Blayke Batten return for their fifth year in the Blue & Gold.
UNCG added five freshmen and one transfer to the 2024 roster.
Maddie Spell was named SoCon Pitcher of the Week (Feb. 26), while Anna White was named SoCon Player of the Week (Feb. 26).
Maxwell is pacing the Spartans with a .433 batting average, 14 RBI, and six home runs.
Maxwell is ranked eighth nationally with 26 hits.
Grace Loftin and White are second on the team with 12 RBI each.
Spell has pitched 40.2 innings this season so far and struck out 18 batters.
The Spartans are nationally ranked fourth in walks (71) and ninth in home runs per game (1.50).
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS

UNCG is coming off playing five games in the I-75 Tournament.
The Spartans went 3-2 at the tournament with the last win being a 3-0 no-hitter for UNCG.
This was the first shutout of the season for UNCG and first-collegiate no-hitter for Maddie Spell.
Maxwell went 2-for-4 with one run scored and a double.
White hit her fourth home run of the season.
RUNDOWN ON CHARLOTTE

The 49ers were voted to finish second in the American Athletic Conference Preseason Poll.
Charlotte concluded the 2023 season 35-23 overall and 16-7 in Conference USA earning an at-large bid to its first NCAA Tournament and winning its first NCAA game.
UNCG and Charlotte split the two-game series last season.
Charlotte opened the 2024 season with a 6-5 10-inning victory over No. 4 Florida State, giving the 49ers their first top-five ranked win and first win against FSU in program history.
The 49ers are coming off a 3-1 weekend at the Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, S.C. picking up a pair of wins over James Madison and one against South Alabama.
Ariana Rodi is leading the team with a .361 batting average and 11 RBI.
Abigail Knight is second with a .333 batting average and Lexi Winters (.306) rounds out the 49ers with a .300 or higher hitting clip.
Sam Gress return in the circle for the 49ers and has tossed 34.1 innings so far, giving up 24 hits and striking out 21 batters.
RUNDOWN ON ELON

Elon concluded the 2023 season 22-26 overall and 15-7 in the CAA.
The Phoenix was voted to finish sixth in the 2024 CAA Preseason Poll.
Carley Davis and Kaitlyn Wells were named to the 2024 CAA Preseason Watch List.
UNCG swept the three-game series last year against the Phoenix.
Mauri Murray is the only one with a .300 batting average or higher swinging .390 currently.
She is pacing the team with 14 RBI, while Allee Seering has 11 RBI.
Murray is also leading Elon with four home runs.
In the circle, McKenna McCard has tossed 25.0 innings and has a 1-2 record in six appearances. She leads the pitching staff with 17 strikeouts.
The Phoenix is ranked 22nd nationally with 0.40 triples per game. Elon is leading the conference in fielding percentage (0.963) and triples per game.
Wells is ranked sixth nationally with three triples and 18th with 0.20 triples per game.

UP NEXT
UNCG will host Minnesota on Tuesday, March 5 at the UNCG Softball Stadium with a first pitch of 4:00 p.m. The Spartans will then host UMass, Merrimack, UMBC, and Charleston Southern for the UNCG Invitational from Friday, March 8 to Sunday, March 10.
