UNCG Baseball Drops Game Three in Canisius Series

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team took an 8-3 loss to Canisius on Sunday at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Canisius struck first in the contest after picking up one run a piece in the third and fourth innings. However, UNCG was able to respond by collecting a couple runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Caleb Cozart walked to first base before advancing to second and third off a Canisus error. Matt Venuto flew out to right field, scoring Cozart from third to put the Spartans on the board (2-1). UNCG added another run in the fourth off an error from Canisius bringing in GC Jarman to tie the game (2-2).

The Golden Griffins were able to regain the lead with five runs in the top of the sixth. The first set of runs came off a single to right field from Howie Stuckey for two RBI. Canisius added three more runs off a homer to right field from Jackson Strong for three RBI (7-2).

Both the Golden Griffins and the Spartans picked up one more run apiece in the eighth inning. Canisius recorded its run from a single by Trent Rumley for one RBI. Venuto responded in the bottom of the eighth by scoring off a wild pitch. Venuto’s run was the last of the day for Canisius to come away with the 8-3 win in game three of the series.

NOTES:
The Spartans only had two errors to the Golden Griffin’s four.
Grant Aycock led the Spartans on the mound with three strikeouts.
Jeremy Wolf led UNCG with two stolen bases.
Venuto and Garman collected one hit a piece for the Spartans.

UP NEXT
The Spartans will next compete in their first set of road contests. The team will face High Point on Tuesday, March 5 at 4 p.m. in Williard Stadium and then Gardner-Webb on Wednesday, March 6 at Bill Masters Field at 4 p.m.
