UNCG Softball Gets Past UMBC, 7-2
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team won its third-straight game behind a 7-2 win over UMBC to conclude the UNCG Invitational on Sunday at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
The Spartans’ Jessie Shipley led off the bottom half of the first with a lead-off walk. Brooklynn Maxwell then took a 1-1 count over the left field wall for a 2-0 advantage. This was her 10th home run of the season.
Neither team saw a base runner in the second inning, and both left two runners on base in the third.
In the bottom of the fourth, Betsy Eatmon singled to left center to start the frame. Samantha Beck came in to pinch run and moved over to second following a sacrifice bunt. In a first and third situation, Tori Dalehite reached on an error and Beck scored to put the Spartans up 3-0.
The Retrievers cut the deficit to two, 3-1, in the top of the sixth behind Ashley Della Guardia’s two-out two-run double to left field. Rhyann Jones retired the side with a pop up to third base, leaving runners on second and third.
The Spartans broke open the game with a four-run sixth inning for a 7-1 lead. UNCG strung together four hits during the frame. Blayke Batten scored on Maxwell’s ground out and then Dalehite crossed home on Grace Loftin’s single. Harwood and Loftin moved into scoring position on a passed ball, and Chartrand’s single through the right side scored both Spartans before UMBC retired the side.
With one last at bat for UMBC, Amaya Carroll doubled to right center bringing home Erin Behel, cutting the deficit to five, 7-2. Jones walked one more batter, before retiring the side on a ground out for her fifth win of the season.
