Southern Conference Announces Softball Weekly Awards

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team saw senior Brooklynn Maxwell and sophomore Salem Ward selected by The Southern Conference (SoCon) as SoCon Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, on Monday.

This marks the second each of SoCon Player and Pitcher of the Week awards this season for the Spartans. Redshirt-junior Maddie Spell was tabbed SoCon Pitcher of the Week, while senior Anna White was selected as SoCon Player of the Week on February 26.

Maxwell hit .522 with a 1.217 slugging percentage over six games last week as UNCG went 4-2. The Virginia Beach, Virginia, native went 12-for-23 with three home runs, three triples, a double, 12 RBIs and eight runs scored, while registering zero strikeouts. In the field, the senior had 10 putouts and 19 assists with zero errors.

In the Spartans’ 4-2 win over Charleston Southern on March 8, Maxwell delivered a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning. She was also one of four Spartans with a multi-hit game against Big Ten opponent Minnesota, where the Golden Gophers ended up on top 8-6 after eight innings on March 5.

During this six-game week for the Spartans, Maxwell played three games at shortstop and three at third base. Maxwell had four multi-RBI games and four multi-hit games. This brings her season total to 15 multi-hit games and eight multi-RBI games. Maxwell is currently on an eight-game hit streak and a 17 game on-base streak.

Maxwell is currently leading the conference in batting average (.442), slugging percentage (.937), on base + slugging percentage (1.451), runs scored (31), hits (42), runs batted in (29), triples (5), home runs (10), at bats (95), and assists (71). She is second in on base percentage (.514) and third in doubles (7), ad stolen bases (7).

Ward had two appearances inside the circle last week for the Spartans, pitching a total of 12.1 innings. In the team’s 5-3 win over Merrimack on March 7, the sophomore entered the game in the top of the second inning with the team down 3-0. Ward proceeded to throw the final 5.1 innings, recording six strikeouts and zero walks.

Two days later, the native of Lexington, North Carolina, tossed her first collegiate complete game in an 8-2 victory over UMass, logging another five strikeouts in the contest. Ward also had three at-bats last week, accounting for two hits, a run scored, and a walk.

Among the conference, Ward is third in opposing batting average (.208), fourth in hits allowed (25), fifth in batters struck out looking (10), fifth in earned runs allowed (12), sixth in ERA (2.57), seventh in runs allowed (17), eighth in batters struck out (27), and ninth in wins (3).
