App State got the scoring started with three runs on two hits in the top of the first. At lead off, Kayt Houston hit a double to left center and moved over to third on a ground out before crossing home on a fielder’s choice, 1-0. Taylor Thorp then crushed a 0-1 count over the left field wall for a two-run blast with one out, 3-0.

UNCG cut the deficit to two, 3-1, on Jorde Chartrand’s RBI ground out that scored Brooklynn Maxwell from third in the bottom of the first. The Spartans loaded the bases in the bottom of the second, but App State retired the side.

The Mountaineers added two more runs in the top of the third extending their lead to four, 5-1. The Spartans’ Grace Loftin crushed her seventh homer of the season off the scoreboard in right center in the bottom of the frame cutting App State’s lead to three, 5-2.

An RBI double from Peyton Darnell in the top of the fourth, gave the Mountaineers the run back, 6-2. In the bottom of the fourth, Madelyn McKinnon took an 0-1 count and lifted the ball over the left field wall for her first-collegiate home run, 6-3. With a runner on second and one out, Maxwell reached first on a hit and drove in Tori Dalehite from second, 6-4.

Both teams threatened in the top of the sixth with runners on base, but neither connected for more runs. Salem Ward came in relief for the Spartans, tossing 1.2 innings and striking out three, but App State was able to hold on for the win, 6-4.
