UNCG Men’s Basketball To Honor Miller & Alonso With Jersey Retirement

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) Director of Athletics, Brian Mackin and Men’s Basketball Head Coach Mike Jones announced Thursday that the jerseys worn by Isaiah Miller and Francis Alonso will be retired this summer.

“We are excited to hang these two jerseys in the rafters,” stated Mackin. “Both selections are UNCG greats, and it is well deserved for Isaiah and Francis. These Spartans put a stamp in UNCG men’s basketball history, and we look forward to welcoming them back this summer to campus for the ceremony.”

Both Miller and Alonso have their names etched in the UNCG men’s basketball record book in a multitude of single season and career top 10 categories. Both former Spartans received many awards from the SoCon during their time in the Blue & Gold.

“Isaiah and Francis are two of the all-time greatest Spartans and they are very fitting to join rare company to have their jerseys retired,” stated Jones. “What they have done for this program elevated the standard of UNCG Basketball. Both were fierce competitors, had championship leadership, and toughness that has come to embody what it means to be a Spartan basketball student-athlete. They set a high bar for future players. We look forward to celebrating these legends!”

Miller was a Spartan from 2017-21 and left UNCG as one of the most decorated players in program history. The native of Covington, Georgia is the only UNCG student-athlete to be named SoCon Athlete of the Year, the only UNCG men’s basketball student-athlete to appear in two NCAA Division I Tournament games, the only UNCG men’s basketball student-athlete ever selected to compete in the Great Clips Slam Dunk Championship, and the only UNCG men’s basketball student-athlete in the 100-plus history of the Southern Conference (SoCon) to be named Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in consecutive years.

Alonso played at UNCG from 2015-19 and is one of just two Spartans that reached the 2,000-career points milestone. Alonso, as well as Miller, are the only two that have been named the SoCon Tournament Most Outstanding Players. The native of Malaga, Spain was voted three times each to the All-SoCon Coaches teams as well as Media teams.

Miller and Alonso’s jerseys will be retired this summer on Saturday, July 27, 2024, to allow for both former Spartans and their families to return to campus along with other former basketball players. This event will be ticketed and open to the public. More details will follow.
