Morehead Panthers(6-0/4-0) off to a Great Start to the High School Baseball Season: BIG Games this week going to Walkertown HS on Tuesday, and home vs. Northern Guilford HS on Wednesday

The Morehead Panthers are on a hot streak, with their (6-0) start to the 2024 high school baseball season…Coach Kaleb Houchins has nine seniors on his team, and the experience has paid off and the dividends are highly noticeable…

The first game of the season, might have been the toughest game of the season to this point, for the Panthers…

In game one, Morehead defeated Orange, 2-1, and the Panthers’ pitchers threw a combined No-Hitter that day…RHPs Anderson Nance and Seth Sharpe got the No-Hitter for Morehead, and the only score for Orange came when there was a Walk, then came a bunt to move the runner over, then that runner moved to third on Wild Pitch, and the run came home to score on a SAC Fly….

Morehead earned the 2-1 victory that afternoon at Orange, and since then they have been on a roll…

There may be a key challenge waiting in the wings, with the Northern Guilford Nighthawks set to visit Morehead this coming Wednesday…Morehead will be throwing their freshman left-handed pitcher, Zachary Grogan…

More very serious challenges loom to the Unbeaten start to the Morehead Panthers season, as Morehead will become the “Packing Panthers” when they hit the road for Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on April 2-5…The trip to the Palmetto State will have Morehead taking part in the Mingo Bay Classic baseball tournament that will feature 110 high school baseball teams from all across the country/nation….The games will be played at Myrtle Beach HS, North Myrtle Beach HS, at Conway HS, and at other high schools all up-and-down the Grand Strand….This will give Morehead a chance to find out where they stack up, against the top talent around…

And speaking of that top talent….Coach Houchins, the Morehead Panthers leader/coach has a young man on his squad named Anderson Nance, and it is not by chance that Nance can dance with the best talent just about anywhere he goes…Nance just broke the Rockingham County strikeout record recently, and he is only six wins away from setting the record for most career wins, by a high school pitcher from Rockingham County….Nance, the RHP bound for the N.C. State Wolfpack baseball program in the Fall of 2024, does not limit his success to the mound…Nance has just recently tied the record for Most Career Stolen Bases in Rockingham County high school history, and that record could be ready to fall into Nance’s lap on Tuesday, when the Morehead Panthers travel to take on the Walkertown Wolfpack…

Morehead’s Coach Houchins told us he feels Walkertown will be his Panthers toughest competition in the Mid-State 2-A Conference, and Walkertown will enter Tuesday’s Mid-State 2-A battle with Morehead, sporting a (5-0) record…Morehead at (6-0), plus at (4-0) in the conference, versus Walkertown at (5-0) overall, and going at (3-0) in the conference, and something will have to give on Tuesday night in Walkertown, N.C.

The Walkertown Wolfpack are coached by former Page Pirates head coach William Hardin…Hardin had coach Randy Norris Sr., as his top assistant coach at Page HS, and then Coach Norris moved over to take the head baseball coaching job at High Point Andrews High School…Coach Houchins from Morehead HS, became good friends with Coach Norris when they met on the baseball diamond, during the Morehead vs. HP Andrews Mid-State 2-A Conference battles…And as you can see, they are playing on a baseball diamond, but everything in that sport of baseball, and in all sports for that matter, ends up coming around Full Circle….

Coach Houchins told us he knows that the Walkertown Wolfpack will be tough, but with the growth and development of this Morehead Panthers baseball program, the Panthers are mighty tough too, with the super (6-0) start to this season, and Morehead checked in-and-out at (23-7) last season…Morehead advanced to the NCHSAA 2-A Regional Finals last season, now with the senior leadership, and the experience on hand among those nine senior Panthers, plus the young talent that is making their mark too, Morehead has their sights set on a State Championship Game Series this season….

The Rockingham County Parks and Recreation Department is doing a stellar job of producing young baseball talents through their Youth Baseball Programs, and Morehead and other Rockingham County high schools are seeing the benefits of those ROCK Parks and Rec youth baseball leagues…

Coach Kaleb Houchins began his work as a baseball assistant head coach at Morehead HS back in 2017-2018…He worked under Coach Roberts, and when Coach Roberts passed away unexpectedly, Coach Houchins took over the Panthers baseball program, becoming the head coach three years ago…Kaleb Houchins goes all the way back to playing high school baseball for these same Morehead Panthers, and his high school coach was Ricky Nance…Coach Houchins began his college baseball playing career at Rockingham County Community College and then went on to play at Bluefield College…

Coach Houchins playing high school baseball for the Morehead Panthers back in his high school days, and now coaching the Morehead Panthers baseball team these days…Like we said before, and you can really see it, they play baseball on a diamond, but everything in that sport of Baseball, and in ALL Sports for that matter, ends up coming around Full Circle….

**********We thank Coach Houchins for his time today, and we thank Coach Randy Norris for passing the word on to Coach Houchins….**********
