UNCG Baseball Claims 6-1 Win Over Mercer for First SoCon Victory

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team claimed its first win in The Southern Conference (SoCon) on Saturday with a 6-1 victory over Mercer at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

Rob Ready threw a career high nine strikeouts in Saturday’s win over the Bears.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UNCG started off Saturday’s game heavy on offense by scoring three runs in the first inning and two runs in the second inning. The first run of the day came after Aidan Brewer singled up the middle to score Jeremy Wolf (1-0). Mitchell Smith and Matt Venuto both recorded back-to-back singles to score Brewer and Jake Ogden, respectfully (3-0). Brewer chipped in for another run in the second inning after scoring off a wild pitch (4-0). With Caleb Cozart on first and Ogden on third, GC Jarman singled to center field to send Ogden across home plate for the 5-0 lead over the Bears at the end of the second inning.

Ready recorded five total strikeouts in the first four innings to keep Mercer scoreless. The Bears got on the board in the fifth inning to cut their deficit to four (5-1).

UNCG added to its advantage in the eighth inning after Wolf singled to right field to score Cam Murphy, allowing the Spartans to walk away comfortably with the 6-1 victory.

NOTES:
Brewer and Ogden led both teams with two runs apiece in the game.
Brewer and Smith led the way with three hits apiece.
Smith and Venuto paced the Spartans on the field with 10 putouts each.
Ready stayed on the mound the entire game for the Spartans, claiming his second win of the season.
