UNCG Softball Shuts Out ETSU, 9-0, in SoCon Opener
JOHNSON CITY, TENN. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team earned its second shutout of the season behind a 9-0 victory over ETSU in both teams’ Southern Conference (SoCon) opener on Saturday evening at Betty Basler Field.
The Spartans scored at least one run in six of the seven innings played, with the Bucs fending off UNCG in the sixth. This was the eighth game this season with 10 or more hits for the Spartans.
UNCG’s first run came on a solo home run from Brooklynn Maxwell to right center. ETSU’s stranded its first two runners of the game in the bottom of the first, as Salem Ward struck out her first batter to end the inning.
With one out in the top of the second, Maycin Brown tripled down the right field line and scored on Kiley McQuillan’s first collegiate home run to left center giving UNCG a 3-0 lead. The Spartans added another run in the third as Maxwell crossed home plate on a fielding error, 4-0.
The Spartans registered another run in the fourth as Brown ran home on a wild pitch, 5-0. Grace Loftin crushed her ninth homer of the season leading off in the top of the fifth for UNCG for a 6-0 advantage.
In the top of the seventh, UNCG added three more runs for a 9-0 lead. Anna White hit her sixth home run of the season with one out to center field and McQuillan singled to center field scoring both Jaden Cheek and Brown during the inning. The Bucs tallied two of their seven hits in the bottom of the frame, but the Spartans retired the side to hold on for the win.
Behind the Numbers
Three Spartans had multi-hit games.
McQuillan went 2-for-4 with a career-best four RBI and her first collegiate home run.
Maxwell went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, on RBI, a stolen base, and one home run.
Maycin Brown went 2-for-2 with three runs scored, two walks, and a triple.
This is the 25th game this season with at least one home run.
Ward gave up just five hits in 5.0 innings, while Reese Byrd gave up two in her 2.0 innings of work.
