UNCG Softball’s Eatmon Hits Two Homers in 6-1 Win Over Furman

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team extended its win streak to six, behind a 6-1 victory over Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Furman on Saturday at the UNCG Softball Stadium.

This is the second conference sweep for the Spartans this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Paladins scored the first run of the game in the top of the first on a fielder’s choice from Sylvia Burroughs that scored Ashlee Lykins for a 1-0 lead.

Both teams threatened in the second inning, but neither were able to get a run across.

The Spartans capitalized on three hits in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead. Betsy Eatmon demolished a ball, hitting it over the left field wall for her third home run of the season tying the game at 1-1. Tori Dalehite followed with a single up the middle, stole second, and then reached third on a wild pitch. Jessie Shipley easily scored Dalehite with a ball that hit the top of the wall but came back into play for her 12th double of the season giving UNCG the advantage for the first time.

In the top of the fifth, Furman got the lead-off hitter on, but UNCG turned a double play to clear the bases. The Paladins’ Burroughs had a double to right center, but Jorde Chartrand struck out the next batter to retire the side.

UNCG added another run in the bottom of the fifth as Meredith Harwood, who came in to pinch hit, singled to right center with Shipley on second to give the Spartans a 3-1 advantage.

In the bottom of the sixth, Eatmon hit her second home run in the game over the left field wall with a runner on, giving UNCG a 5-1 lead. With two outs, Shipley crushed her third homer of the season extending the Spartans’ lead to five, 6-1. UNCG retired the Paladins in the top of the seventh on three-straight ground outs to secure the win and the series sweep.
