UNCG Baseball Coasts Past Gardner-Webb, 11-1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team coasted past Gardner-Webb on Tuesday night with an 11-1 victory at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

Tuesday’s win was UNCG’s second run rule win this season with the first coming against Mercer, 13-3 in Greensboro.

Hunter Shuey threw a career high seven strikeouts in his four innings of action.

The Spartans recorded the first run of the game in the first inning when Jake Ogden grounded out to Gardner-Webb’s shortstop, sending Jeremy Wolf home for the 1-0 lead.

UNCG added another run in the second inning when Mitchell Smith doubled down the left field line, bringing in GC Jarman (2-0).

The Spartans tacked on five more runs in the third inning. First, when Ogden grounded out to the second baseman, scoring Wolf (3-0). The Blue & Gold took the 4-0 lead when Caleb Cozart hit a sacrifice fly down the right field line, scoring Brewer from third base. Another run of the inning came when Smith secured his second double of the day, scoring Jarman (5-0). The final two runs of the inning were recorded when Jacob Dilley notched his first collegiate hit for two RBI (7-0).

Gardner-Webb got on the board with its only run in the fifth inning. However, the Spartans quickly responded by tacking on two more runs in the bottom half of the inning when Zachary Walsh singled through the right side for two RBI (9-1).

After both teams stayed scoreless in the sixth inning, UNCG earned the run rule win in the bottom half of the seventh inning. First, Smith doubled down the first base line, scoring Jarman (10-1). The final run of the game came when Luke Jenkins stepped in as a pinch hitter, singling through the right side bringing in Smith for the 11-1 victory.

This is the third game this season that the Spartans held their opponent to only one run.
Mayson Dear matched his career high of three strikeouts on the mound.
Jarman and Smith led the way with three runs apiece.
Smith paced both teams with four hits and three RBI.
Smith was the only player tonight to record a triple.
Three different Spartans recorded a stolen base with Jarman leading the way with two stolen bases.
Jacob Dilley earned a career high of 10 putouts on the field.
