UNCG Baseball Set to Host Non-Conference Series Against Radford

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team will play host to the Radford Highlanders for a three-game non-conference series this weekend on Friday, April 19 to Sunday, April 21 at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

UNCG most recently experienced a late surge in offense while facing Elon on the road on Tuesday night, scoring 11 runs in the eighth and four more in the ninth on the way to a 15-1 victory over the Phoenix.
Elon scored its only run on an RBI single in the second inning.
Hunter Shuey earned the win in his third start and 10th appearance of the season. He threw a season-high seven innings of one-run baseball with six hits surrendered while striking out two along the way.
Caleb Cozart led the Spartans with four RBI in the ballgame, which included a three-run home run out to center in the eighth.
Jake Ogden paced UNCG with a season-high four hits.
Jeremy Wolf finished with three hits in four at bats, including two RBI and two runs.
Danny Thompson Jr. and Sam Murchison dealt shutout eighth and ninth innings out of the bullpen and combined for four strikeouts.

UNCG enters this weekend’s series with a 20-15 overall record and 13-10 mark so far in non-conference games. Its 7-5 record in conference games has them at third in The Southern Conference (SoCon) standings.
Prior to overwhelming Elon 15-1 on Tuesday, the Spartans won a pair of games against Western Carolina in Cullowhee last weekend as part of a three-game SoCon series. UNCG won 15-11 on Friday and Saturday before falling in Sunday’s finale, 7-6 in 10 innings.
Over its last five games, UNCG has totaled 62 runs and only allowed 31.
Additionally, the Spartans have scored exactly 15 runs in three of their last four games.
The Spartans’ 11-run eighth inning on Tuesday at Elon marked their first time posting double-digit runs in one frame since previously accomplishing it by scoring 11 on April 29, 2023, at Mercer in the eighth inning of an eventual 18-13 victory.
As a team, UNCG is ranked in the top-30 nationally over three categories, including 11th in sacrifice bunts (30), 20th in stolen bases (76) and 23rd in stolen bases per game (2.17).
Cozart paces the SoCon and ranks among the best in the country in several offensive categories, including home runs (16, 10th in NCAA), HR per game (0.47, 13th in NCAA), RBI (54, 7th in NCAA), RBI per game (1.59, 4th in NCAA) and slugging percentage (.768, 30th in NCAA).
Wolf has played a large part in the Spartans’ sacrifice bunting efforts. He leads the conference with eight sacrifice bunts (10th in NCAA) and an average of 0.26 sac bunts per game (11th in NCAA).
Rob Ready was named the SoCon Pitcher of the Week after the team’s SoCon opening series win against Mercer when he threw for a complete game with a career high nine strikeouts in game two against the Bears. He ranks 21st in the nation and is tied for the top spot in the SoCon with nine starts so far this season.
Cozart was named the SoCon Player of the Week and the Perfect Game Player of the Week after hitting four home runs in the season opening series against Fairfield.
Julien Peissel was selected as the SoCon Pitcher of the Week after starting off on the mound in UNCG’s win over No. 1 Wake Forest on Tuesday, Feb. 20. Peissel is leading the team with 35 strikeouts.
Ready was named to the Preseason All-SoCon second team.
UNCG was tabbed to finish sixth in the 2024 SoCon Preseason Coaches’ Poll after finishing the 2023 season with a 25-34 overall record and 9-12 mark in SoCon play.
UNCG concluded last season in the semifinal round of the SoCon Tournament, falling to No. 1 Samford, 9-5.
The Spartans have 22 newcomers for the 2024 season: 10 transfers and 12 freshmen.
Eighteen Spartans have returned from last season for UNCG.

Radford is 10-24 overall and 3-9 in conference action for a tie of eighth in the Big South.
The Highlanders are coming off a 5-2 road loss to East Tennessee State University on Wednesday night. Radford scored the game’s first and last runs in the first and eighth innings but surrendered five to the Buccaneers between the first and fifth. Conner Butler recorded both RBI for the Highlanders and leads the team with 31 for the year.
Butler also leads the team in runs (26), doubles (10), sacrifice flies (3) and is one of four players to start in all 34 games this season for the Highlanders.
Radford ranks four in the nation in triples (17) and third in terms of triples per game (1.74). They also sit at 16th with 81 stolen bases this season and average 2.38 per game for 12th in the country.
Cameron Pittman paces Radford with a .351 batting average and is tied with Corbin Grantham having three triples, which is tied for 47th in the country and has them tied for the lead in the Big South.
Zack Whitacre leads Radford with a .970 OPS, which includes him pacing the Highlanders with a .551 slugging percentage. He also leads the team in walks (20), total bases (70) and has started in all 34 games.
Scott Rouse and Dylan Howard have been mainstays in Radford’s pitching rotation this season. Both right-handed pitchers have recorded nine starts to lead the Highlanders. Rouse owns a 5.24 ERA and .247 opponent batting average in 44.2 innings pitched while Howard has a 5.40 ERA, .295 opponent batting average and 45 innings pitched.
UNCG is 8-8 in the all-time series against Radford, which dates back to the first meeting on April 13, 1992. This weekend marks the first meeting between the two since the 2012 season, where the Spartans bested the Highlanders two games to one. The Spartans prevailed 7-3 in game one before falling 7-4 in game two and winning 7-3 again in the finale of the three-game series in Greensboro on March 2-4, 2012.
