Caleb Cozart Named Semifinalist for 2024 Dick Howser Trophy

DALLAS, Texas – UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball senior Caleb Cozart has been named a semifinalist for the 2024 Dick Howser Trophy, presented by The Game Headwear.

The prestigious award in college baseball is given to the top player based on two rounds of national voting by National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) members.

In total, there are 68 candidates from 48 different schools. The Southern Conference (SoCon) is represented by three athletes, including Samford’s John Anderson (2B) and Michael Ross (SP) joining Cozart on the list.

“Being in the mix for this award is amazing, I never thought I would receive such a thing,” said Cozart. “Things like this would not be possible without my teammates, coaches and everyone else doing their part to help the team.”

Among the best power hitters in the country, Cozart ranks 13th in the NCAA with 22 home runs as well as 14th in terms of home runs per game (0.46). He broke UNCG’s single-home run record when he hit his 18th this year back on April 24 while the Spartans were hosting High Point in Greensboro.

The High Point, N.C., native is on the verge of setting another benchmark in UNCG’s record book. Standing at 72 RBI this season (10th in the NCAA), Cozart is just a pair of runs batted in from breaking Kennedy Jones’ record of 73 during the 2022 campaign. He currently ranks eighth in the country by averaging 1.5 RBI per game.

Finalists will be announced on June 8. The ’24 award will then be presented at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha and televised on MLB Network at the College World Series on June 12.

ABOUT THE AWARD
The Dick Howser Trophy, presented by The Game Headwear, is given in memory of the former Florida State University All-America shortstop and major league player and manager who died of brain cancer in 1987. The trophy is regarded as baseball’s most prestigious award. Criteria for consideration of the trophy include performance on the field, leadership, moral character and courage – all qualities that were exemplified by Dick Howser’s life.
