UNCG Baseball Thumps USC Upstate, 14-8

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team won a non-conference series opener against USC Upstate 14-8 on Thursday night at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

Thursday night marked the 16th time this season that UNCG has plated 10 or more runs in a game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After USC Upstate scored one run in the top of the first, UNCG responded with Aidan Brewer and Jake Ogden hitting back-to-back home runs on the first pitches they saw to make it 2-1.

Upstate reclaimed the lead during the second inning when Daniel Gernon singled through the left side to plate a pair. However, UNCG answered with two runs to take back a 4-3 lead after Ogden roped a single that deflected off the third baseman and allowed two runs to score.

USC Upstate reclaimed the lead and then some in the top of the third and fourth innings by scoring two runs in each inning to take a 7-3 lead. Tyler Lang drove in the first runs with a single up the middle that scored two. Then in the fourth, Jace Rinehart hit a two-run home run over the wall out in left.

Vance Sheahan made it 8-4 Upstate in the fifth inning when he singled up the middle with two outs to score Koby Kropf. UNCG answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie it at eight. Trey Truitt scored the first two runs with a double off the wall in right-center. Jacob Dilley then hit a sacrifice fly out to right to score Truitt before Luke Jenkins recorded an RBI groundout to short to tie it, 8-8.

In the seventh inning, Truitt put UNCG back on top when he bounced a single over the right side of the infield to score Luke Holland from third and make it 9-8.

The eighth inning saw UNCG tack on five more runs to make it 14-8. Ogden drove in the first run on a single up the middle. Brewer then scored on a wild pitch before Holland launched his sixth home run of the season out to center to extend the lead to six, 14-8.
