This Saturday begins the the 2024 Greensboro Community Swim Association’s City Meet Championship. Unrivaled in Greensboro youth sports tradition, more than 2,000 swimmers from ages 4 to 19 hit the pool for ultimate bragging rights. The three day swimming spectacle, hosted by the Greensboro Aquatic Center, involves all 20 teams in a battle for TWO Championships…
Two Championships?
Yes. Confused and/or surprised? Let’s make sense of this. City Meet is comprised of the CHAMPIONSHIP (sometimes referred to as “prelims/finals”) and the OPEN Championship (typically referred to as the “Open”). Both happen concurrently during City Meet, but they are scored separately and have slightly different structures. The general idea is this: with so many swimmers in the City Meet, the Open expands competitive opportunities to more swimmers. Both championships provide bragging rights. The winner of the Championship sessions is the formally recognized winner of City Meet. But the Open Champion is highly regarded as well. The Open Champion is a team with depth that has many summer-only swimmers who improved as the regular season progressed.
Last year it was the Friendly Frogs taking home the Open Championship and the Sherwood Raiders hoisting the City Championship trophy.
