Franken matches program record for career shutouts in win
from Bryce Johnson, Director of Athletic Communications
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Jenna Shotton (Walnut Cove, N.C.) struck twice at Appenzeller Field, upping her team-leading goals tally to four while Naomi Campbell (Youngsville, N.C.) aided her with an assist in addition to a goal to propel the Guilford College women’s soccer team to a 3-0 victory over crosstown rival Greensboro College on Monday night.
With the three-goal win, the Quakers pick up win number-three without any setbacks at 3-0-0. They have also finished on the right side of the clash of the GC’s each of the last three years, while their margin of victory of three is the top mark this millennium. The Pride, on the other hand, falter to 0-5-0 on the year.
After seeing her solo shutout retracted by a stat-correction from last week’s matchup with North Carolina Wesleyan University, Ady Franken (Peoria, Ill.) finished the job this week to match the program-record for career shutouts with 19. She earned it too with three saves, including a pair of brilliant diving stops among the five total shots sent her direction to improve to 3-0-0. Carlisle Dozier made her first start in net for the visitors and looked indecisive and hesitant in the first half of play resulting in getting replaced at the break despite only allowing one goal against one save. She ended up on the hook for the loss to fall to 0-1-0. Lindsay Fox permitted two goals but made three saves in the final 45.
Shotton netted the first two tallies for the hosts, including her second game-winner in the season’s three games, with Campbell netting the put-away score bringing their season totals to four and two respectively. Campbell added an assist on the evening, as did Carmen Ellis (Johnson City, Tenn.). Ainsley Yates (West End, N.C.) got five shots off in the game with two on frame to lead all players. Grace Garraghty and Skyler Molnar each had two shots with one on target while Hannah McCarthy’s lone shot was on frame for the guests.
Guilford took the lead just under ten minutes in against the Pride. Lily Brown (Boone, N.C.) forced a takeaway around midfield, controlling the touch to Campbell who corralled it with her left foot, taking a wide turn and sending a beautiful feed down the middle of the field. Shotton won the race to the ball, off the left post at the goal line on the football field lines, before beating the keeper with a right-footed shot to take advantage of the one-on-one opportunity by going to the low-middle portion of the net for her third goal in as many games, and what ended up as the game-winner.
The remainder of the first half was reasonably uneventful with the Quakers maintaining the pressure with 11 total shots, albeit they only had one attempt threaten the net outside of the goal. Greensboro only managed a single shot that was not on target and the two squads split the pair of corner kicks in the stanza.
Entering the second half of play, the hosts wasted little time doubling their advantage. Ellis dug the ball out of the corner on the left side, finding Shotton just beyond the top-right corner of the 18. Granted time and space, the junior had time to step into one and shoot a rocket into the center of the twine, threading the needle under the crossbar, but above the gloves of the keeper, Fox, to score her second tally of the contest in the 47th minute.
Greensboro would get a pair of opportunities to get one back. A chip into the box was corralled on the side of the six-yard box. The ball found the feet of the former Quaker, Garraghty, but Franken made a diving deflection to her right to knock it wide. On the ensuing corner, the ball pinballed around loosely, but eventually found McCarthy just inside the right corner of the 18’. Once again, however, Franken dove to her right and punched it away, equaling her season save total entering the contest, in approximately a 30-second sequence.
Guilford put the game out of reach in the 75th minute with Campbell contributing the finisher. Collecting the ball roughly 20-yards out on the right wing, she boxed out the defender and turned inside, battling through contact to get straight-away before ripping a beautiful shot with the right foot as she tumbled to the turf, tucking it into the upper-right 90 from just beyond the 18’. Her second score in as many games extended the advantage to its final score of 3-0.
The second half was a bit more even than the first with the Quakers shot total falling to eight against four for the visitors. Both teams were much more efficient with their looks as well with three of the Pride’s four attempts being on target and six of the eight looks by Guilford were on frame. The home squad also maintained the edge in corners, 5-2.
