Furman Gets Past UNCG Women’s Soccer, 1-0
GREENVILLE, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women’s soccer team fell to The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Furman 1-0 on Thursday in a very competitive battle at Stone Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams came into the game with fight, as UNCG put two shots on the board in the first three minutes of play with one being on target from Mel Herrera. Furman responded with shots on goal in the eighth and 10th minutes of the game. The 16th and 17th minutes were the beginning of Furman’s offensive attack from the corner. The Spartans reacted and began shooting from long range, but Furman was there to halt them. In the 29th minute, Furman had its third corner kick of the game. The Paladins’ Ava King sent in an inswinger from the near post that Maddie Massie headed to the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. The Spartans went into the half with an 8-6 shot advantage while the Paladins held the lead in corner kicks, 6-3

Possession favored the Spartans in the second half, as they racked up the shots, including a shot on goal from Rachel Poplin at 47:18. UNCG’s best chance in the second half came with just over six minutes to go in the game. Taylor Mentzer collected the ball after Ava Kiss dumped the ball off to her on the right side of the 18-yard box. Mentzer sent a cross in that skipped into the box and a Paladin defender misplayed the ball, sending it into the hands of Furman’s goalkeeper to hold on to the advantage.

UNCG held the advantage in shots, 14-9.
Both teams tallied four saves each.
Furman had the edge in shots on goal, 5-4, and corner kicks, 8-6.
