GREENSBORO, N.C. – They have won big, they have escaped in overtime, they have protected their home field, and now they have gone on the road and won a thriller against a rival.
The signs of a special season are all there for Northern Guilford. The Nighthawks scored the final 10 points of the game to escape Northwest Guilford with a 17-10 victory.
They are a perfect 7-0 overall.
In a low-scoring first half, Northern struck first. A lengthy opening drive ended in six after Dwight Hall rushed in from 3 yards out to help give the Nighthawks a 7-0 advantage.
In the final minutes of the second, Nathan Cox found the end zone from 2 yards away to tie things up at 7-7 going into the locker room.
Northwest opened the third by taking its only lead of the night. The Vikings drove down to the Northern 5-yard line and converted on a 22-yard Nolan Hagemann field goal to go up 10-7.
The Nighthawks answered right back. After getting a first down at the Viking 12, Northern’s up-tempo offense rushed to the line of scrimmage and quickly got off a snap.
Jaxson Kemp rolled to his right and connected with Christopher Morrison Jr. who dove in for a 14-10 lead.
Faced with 4th and 2 from the Northwest Guilford 3-yard line, Northern had a decision to make.
3:34 remained on the clock. The Nighthawks sent Kobe Guardado on for a 20-yard field goal, and he did not miss.
Leading 17-10, the Northern Guilford defense needed one final stop.
It came quickly as Anders Mitchell’s first pass on the ensuing Northwest drive landed in the hands of a leaping Kevin Willoughby for an interception.
