Okawa’s Free Kick, Baerwalde’s Clean Sheet Send UNCG Men’s Soccer Past VMI
LEXINGTON, Va. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men’s soccer team edged out a 1-0 victory over Virginia Military Institute (VMI), 1-0, in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action on Saturday afternoon at Patchin Field.
Senior Yoshiya Okawa scored the only goal on a free kick in the 30th minute to lift the Spartans to victory. In goal for the Spartans, junior Tim Baerwalde made two saves for his second clean sheet as a Spartan and the fifth of his college career.
The win extended UNCG’s perfect record over VMI to 23-0-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Spartans applied the majority of the pressure from the get go and never looked back. Okawa scored the Spartans’ only goal in the 30th minute by firing a free kick into the bottom-left corner with his left foot moments after redshirt junior Steven Hernandez drew the foul at the top of the box. UNCG carried the 1-0 lead into the half while also leading 7-4 shots with a 1-0 edge in corner kicks.
The second half saw the Spartans play stout defensively while continuing to get chances. UNCG hit the left post twice during the second half and ultimately outshot VMI, 7-1, while also leading in corners, 3-2, on the way to the 1-0 victory.

– Okawa scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season.
– Okawa and Arnaud Tattevin paced the team with four shots each.
– Baerwalde made two saves for his second clean sheet of the season.
– Baerwalde, Axel Alejandre, Daniel Longo and Emmanuel Hagan each played the full 90 minutes.
– UNCG led VMI in corner kicks, 4-2, shots, 14-5, and shots on goal, 3-2.

UNCG Volleyball Falls to ETSU, 3-0
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team took a 3-0 loss in The Southern Conference (SoCon) play to the Bucs of ETSU (14-25, 21-25, 21-25) on Saturday evening in Fleming Gym.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bucs jumped out to a 3-0 run to maintain control of the entire first set. ETSU closed out the game with a 7-1 run to secure set one, 25-14.
With UNCG down 3-1 in set two, the Spartans notched a 3-0 run that was concluded with a kill from Allie Sweet to give the squad their first lead of the match (4-3). ETSU quickly responded with a 6-1 run to take the 9-5 lead. Despite the Bucs holding the lead for the rest of set two, UNCG came back within one late in the set. With ETSU in control, 21-16, the Spartans posted a 4-0 run that featured a kill by Kendall Lanclos and three consecutive service aces from Izora Gragg (21-20). However, ETSU was able to respond with a 4-1 run to claim set two, 25-21.
The third set was more of a back-and-forth battle between the Spartans and Bucs consisting of 12 ties and three lead changes. However, with UNCG in control, 21-19, ETSU notched a 6-0 run to conclude the third and final set, walking away with the 3-0 win.
BY THE NUMBERS
Sweet and Lanclos led the Spartans with nine kills apiece.
Gragg and Lanclos paced the squad with both collecting a new match high of three service aces each.
Cece Fitz and Sweet led UNCG in the middle with two blocks apiece.
Bloom Princell and Gragg tag teamed as the setters with 14 and 12 assists, respectively.
Chloe Nussbaum led the team as the libero with 13 digs.
