from Bryce Johnson, Director of Athletic Communications

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Scoring virtually from the opening kick and getting contributions from eight different players, the Guilford College women’s soccer team steamrolled Sweet Briar College, 9-0, on Senior Day, clinching an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament berth at Appenzeller Field at the Armfield Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon.

Leapfrogging a pair of teams with the three points collected, the Quakers jump into fifth place entering the regular season’s final week, improving to 11-3-2, and 5-2-1 in conference competition. The Vixens remain winless against ODAC opponents, now at 0-8-0 and just 3-10-0 overall.

All three keepers saw time in net for GC on the afternoon with Madison Musgrave (Lexington, N.C.) getting the starting nod and going the first 45. She faced one shot that was not on frame but still improved to 2-0-0. Ady Franken (Peoria, Ill.) went the next 26 minutes and also saw one shot that was off target before Lulu Herndon (Cary, N.C.) went unchallenged over the 18 minutes. Trista Cleaves went the distance for the visitors, getting peppered with 36 shots, 23 on net. She allowed nine goals against 14 saves, taking the loss to fall to 3-7-0.

Matching their season-high of nine goals scored, Guilford got contributions from eight different players. Naomi Anderson (Youngsville, N.C.) scored the first one for her conference-leading fifth game-winner of the year while adding two assists. Ashlyn Miller (Charlotte, N.C.) stayed hot, as the lone multi-goal scorer of the afternoon. Kylee Berry (Kernersville, N.C.), Carmen Ellis (Johnson City, Tenn.) Isabella Irizarry (Waxhaw, N.C.), Simone Jenkins (Huntersville, N.C.), Ashlyn Kahre (Fort Mill, S.C.), and Jenna Shotton (Walnut Cove, N.C.) all contributed goals. Shotton added a pair of helpers on the day while Mya Jarvis (Clemmons, N.C.) and Zekiah Johnson (Winston-Salem, N.C.) had one assist apiece. Maddie Ickes and Alexis Diaz attempted shots for the Vixens.

The Quakers immediately got to work picking apart the Sweet Briar defense. Settling back and setting up, Jarvis distributed a long pass down the right wing. Anderson proceeded to outrun the entire defense, dribbling to the top-right corner of the 6’ and casually went low-strong side for the Quakers fastest goal of the season just 80 seconds in.

Moments later, Musgrave stepped up and cleared a ball out for GC with it taking a high hop down the right wing. Once again, Anderson controlled and brought it up to a similar spot to the one she scored from, this time opting to distribute to Shotton who was wide open with a vacant net in the middle and redirected it in with her left in the 10th minute.

Less than 120 seconds later, Shotton and Ellis played a little two-man game at the top-left corner of the 18’, eventually getting Ellis a clean look approaching the goal line. She used her left foot and sliced it back into the right corner of the net for her first goal of the season.

Berry got in on the fun in the 15th minute of play. Shotton sent a ball in on a corner where Anderson headed it to Berry at near point-blank range to score her second goal of the fall.

Kahre added another in the 21st, gathering in the top-right portion of the box, bringing it back to set up and get in the center of the pitch just beyond the 18’, using her left to hit a strike into bottom-left corner.

Dialing back the pressure a little, the Quakers still tacked on one more before the half in the 43rd minute. Johnson brought it down into the box on the left side before finding Jenkins in front. The freshman’s first shot was saved, but the rebound came right back to her and her second look found the back of the net to make it 6-0 through 45 minutes of play.

Early in the second half, Guilford added on once more. Johnson brought it down the left wing, dropping a defender along the way, before sending a cross all the way through the 6’. It missed the foot of the first Quaker, but not Irizarry’s who scored on the wide-open net.

Miller finished off the scoring with two goals in the last 20 minutes. The first came in the 72nd as she gathered and maneuvered past the 18’, eventually taking a shot with her right and scoring into the left side of the net. Finally, in the 84th, among a bunch of congestion she ended up with the ball and used her right foot to shoot into the top-right corner to bring the final score to 9-0.

Guilford hosts their final home game of the regular season on Wednesday night, October 30th, when Averett comes to town for a 6:00 PM kickoff.
