High School Basketball Tonight Finals and we were in the packed stands for Dudley at Smith: The most-packed gym I have ever seen, with Dudley boys 57, Smith 53/Smith girls 77, Dudley 55(That Place was Packed/Bobby MAC Packed)

Bonus coverage with Saturday scores:Grimsley boys 55, CPLA 46..Oak Ridge boys 70, CPI 67…High Point Christian Academy boys 77, Davidson Day 75…Bishop McGuinness boys 49, George Wythe 45…Caldwell Academy boys 65, Berean Baptist Academy 63…Reidsville boys 73, Corvian Community 66…Greensboro Day School boys 73, Carolina Day School 34…
Dudley won the boys game, while the Smith girls took the lady’s contest, but the bigger story was the size of the crowd…We were sitting in the stands, and I got a chance to experience what it would be like to be inside a packed sardine can, because the Bobby Mac was Packed…That Bob McAdoo Gym was SOLD OUT…Fans filled the stands, the steps going up into the stands(fans were sitting on the steps), the baselines were so crowded the security told the fans to clear the baselines, but the fans could not leave that area due to the fact there was no seating…Standing Room Only and beyond…

The closest thing that I have seen to this crowd was when I went to/attended a Clemson at Duke basketball game at Cameron Indoor Stadium, back in the late 1980s/early ’90s and sat amongst the crowd at that game…At tonight’s Dudley at Smith game, there in the Bob McAdoo Gym on the Ben L. Smith High School campus, you did not dare get up and leave your seat/space, because if you walked away, your Spot Would Be Long GONE….

Fans sitting alongside me in the stands there at Smith, were saying this was the biggest crowd they had ever seen for this game, while it has been played at Smith HS…Rematch coming up on Friday January 31, at James B. Dudley HS, inside the Chester Bradley Gym…Will be there for that one too, Good Lord Willing…
Final Scores again from tonight/Friday night:
Dudley boys 57, Smith 53
Smith girls 77, Dudley 55
MORE on this game and MORE scores on the way…..
JV Boys Score:Smith 75, Dudley 56

MORE on the Dudley at Smith Girls Game:
End of the First Quarter:Smith 13, Dudley 7…Halftime:Smith 30, Dudley 20…End of Third Quarter:Smith 53, Dudley 41…Final:Smith 77, Dudley 55
Smith scoring:Williams led the Lady Eagles in scoring with 24 points…Deberry 16, London Haith 15, Maffet 11, Daye 6, Whatley 2
Dudley scoring:Kimora Haith 20 points…Terry 16, Taylor 6, Pass 5, Abney 2, #31 with 6 points, #25 with 2 points…31 and 25 not available by MaxPreps.com…
Smith(10-1/3-0)…Dudley(5-6/2-1)
The biggest plus for Smith was their girl in the Post…Amani Williams…She by our numbers had 24 points, and she added numerous rebounds and caused pure havoc there in the lane on defense…Very solid shooting both inside and outside by Kalecia Deberry, and the floor general, London Haith has her game going on, in a good way…The best I have seen Dudley play all season long, and for the largest and the longest part of the night, the Panthers defense is what was keeping them in the game, and they got some steady outside shooting from Janiah Terry with her corner threes, and she had three of those 3s…Kimora Haith gave Dudley a good dribble-driver, but Dudley had no answer for Smith’s Amani Williams, there in the paint/lane…Williams was a/the difference-maker…

MORE on the Dudley at Smith boys game…
End of First Quarter:Smith 10, Dudley 10…Halftime:Smith 28, Dudley 25…End of the Third Quarter:Dudley 39, Smith 37…Final:Dudley 57, Smith 53
Dudley scoring:CJ Cortney Jones 15 points, CJ Carlos Neely 14 points, Speller 6, Rogers 6, McNeil 6, Nichols 4, Davis 3, Darius Barnett 2…
Smith scoring:Jy Dawkins with 26 points, including four 3s…Miller Jr. 13 points, Mann 7, Partee 3, Payne 2, Cowan 2…
First lead of the game for the Smith Golden Eagles came at the 6:55 mark in the second quarter of the game, and for a moment it looked like they would not trail again in this game, but Dudley forged back ahead 39-37 as the Third Quarter was coming to a close…The teams traded leads on into the fourth period, but Dudley took over with their reserve Jayden Davis hitting some key free throws, and for Dudley, CJ Neely was a real difference-maker, as he came back to his old school/Smith, and played one of the better games of his career…

Tonight Neely was playing like he used to play when he was a sophomore and leading the Smith Golden Eagles to key wins/victories…Smith is going to have to get some help for Dawkins and Kenny Miller Jr…The help for Smith is there, but they were not getting it done on Friday…Got to get more from Payne in the post, he is 6’10 and has the height advantage over just about every player he will see/face this season…Tonight/Friday, Andrew Rogers from Dudley bodied up with the Smith post players, and Rogers was physical and he eating up the space and making it tougher on Smith in the paint….

CJ Jones had two 3s, and five made Free Throws for the Dudley Panthers…And like we were saying, Smith will be looking to get more help/production from guys like Payne, Gavin Palmore, Tayshawn Mann, Kady’n Turner-Scott, Micah Cowan, and Kendrick Johnson…Those guys for Smith can hold down spots on the court, but they will have to produce key points too…The Smith players, will need to join in and get involved in the offensive scoring load, adding to what guys like Dawkins and Miller Jr. were doing…The other Eagles will have to be more than just bodies out there on the court…I had Smith winning this one at home, but did not take into account how well CJ Neely was going to be playing for Dudley…He was a difference-maker…
Dudley(5-5/2-1)
Smith(11-2/2-1)

  1. What do you do when your team can’t stop a player from getting to the rim. You play ZONE!!!!!!!!!!

  2. When it’s packed in the Bobby Mac, it is PACKED. When I was a student, I remember a few Smith-Dudley’s and other games that brought the crowds and the energy. But there is nothing like Smith-Dudley

  3. When my daughter was a Smith cheerleader in 2001-2003 timeframe the Dudley-Smith Basketball games were held in Corbett Center on A&T campus…and it was full!..thats how big the crowds were…and the football games between the two were held at Truist(of course it wasn’t called that then, but that was the location) Field. And that place was more than half full. I was there!

  4. Those crowds for the Smith-Dudley football games at N.C. A&T were way off the charts, and Smith won a few of those too, back when they had The Bus in the backfield, and Coach Tony McKee coaching the Golden Eagles…The basketball games there at the Corbett Center were very large too….I was there for most all of those Dudley-Smith meetings at A&T…A&T jacked up the prices they were charging the high schools to run those games…Had to have about 25 security people just to man the crowds…That was required and that got expensive…The police and campus security from N.C. A&T were getting paid time and a-half to man the operation, and that got so costly, you couldn’t make any money and that is one reason they moved the games back on campus…Other reasons too, I am sure, but I am not aware of all of them…They had a guy named Billy, there at A&T, who was my contact, and he was very helpful…I sure do appreciate how much he helped making sure I got my spots to broadcast the games, and Billy made it work so smooth…Sure remember him and how much he did to make it work…Good times back in those days…Get there around 4/4:30 pm and usually one of the last to leave out from the football and basketball venues…

  5. And as the old saying goes, “It would have been tough to get two tall midgets in there last night…Wonder if Page-Grimsley basketball can top this crowd???

  6. That place was hopping last night and the players were too. Biggest high school basketball crowd that I have seen in Greensboro over the years.

  7. Big ups to the smith girls and the dudley boys. Everybody thought the smith girls would win but what happened to the smith boys? I was hearing they had a squad that might go undefeated this year. Was it bad refs, somebody got hurt or what?

  8. Dudley actually had the players that were going down with injury…Cramps and other issues…

  9. Looking to get those basketball rankings cranking this coming week, probably come with the first edition going into the Friday night’s games…
